It is fine by me Luca.
I have some red top cans I will have to photograph soon.
Most are post war dated cans, and of course we do not know for sure when they were painted.

Yes, my "theory" is that the Arnold guys just copied, in 1949, what might be seen on jeeps in U.S. Military Zone.
That was an ebay picture, but my own Arnold jeep , which I had since childhood ,is just the same, and is 1949 dated on the licence plate.
I have a 1949 gas can, and one of these day I will end up painting the top in red, just for fun.

Hi
I 've got a jerrycan (CAVALIER - ICC - 5 1/4 - 1943) and i need information about it. Does someone know what signified the "200" painted in yellow, the "W" and the "2" in white ??
Do you have an idea about the division infanterie it could come from ?
The jerrycan could come from the debarqument in provence "draggon operation" but impossible to find any information about those yellow penciles.

I beg your pardon for my bad english :|

Thanks for all :D
Guy

Hi, Guy

Welcome to G503.
I'm sure someone will have all the answers for you.

Firtsly the 80 is probably the 'octane' rating - commonly 80 for petrol/gas/l'essence.

All the best

Perhaps...."V - 80" stands for "Vehicle - 80 Octane".....as opposed to "A - 100" which might mean "Aircraft - 100 Octane"....

Years ago at a friends place he had a building full of water cans. He told me he was going to sell them as scrap metal. He let me pick though them, as I was only after the WWII dated ones. They were all tact marked. Now, after looking at the postings here I wish I had gone through and picked out some of the better marked later water cans. Some of the cans I got have the Marine shipping stencels on them also.
If some one who could post photos for me would PM me thier e-amil I will get some photos this week end of them, plus some WWII Marine jerry cans with markings.
One of the few, Frank USMC RET
