After a lot of measuring and talking with old timers I've decided I'm going to cut both frame, the CCKW and the Chevy then weld the Chevy frame to the back of the CCKW frame, that way I have my spring perches already installed as well as all the mounting for the chevy bed, I've spent the last week removing all the riveted stuff off the frames, spare tire mount, battery box, gas tank mounts, I think, extra cross member off the CCKW frame right were I needed to cut of course, I'm going to cut half way through the frame then make a horizontal cut back the width of the frame then the rest of the way through so there isn't a straight line for a break to start, then I will cut a piece of plate and bolt it inside so you won't see it, all the old timers told me this would be plenty for such a light duty application. I figured while I had it still together I should pull the pintle hook off the CCKW frame since it's missing on the chevy, it's been a while since I pulled one of these, I forgot just what a pain it could be, took a couple hours and a 12 ton jack but it finally gave up!

The last three weeks have been spent cleaning off all the crap they welded onto the back of the Chevy frame, then wearing out a couple grinder wheels getting it all smooth again, a light coat of bondo to fill the pits, and it's much better looking, the rear end was steamed cleaned and primed and ready to drop back into the frame, I also moved the front half of the truck over to the barn so I can get the welding leads to it, I stacked up a bunch of wooden blocks under the frame used some wedges to level it and checked it with a transit and it's perfectly level, tomorrow I'm going to shoot a couple coats of paint on the rear diff and rear of the frame then I can set it up to the front half and start welding. I was amazed when I went to pull the rear springs from the frame, all 8, two different rear ends, of the pins came out with no problem what so ever! Image

It's a 47 Zephyr sedan, it's going to be the family lead sled, some day, it's a perfect rust free body, that's had 4 inches taken from the windshield and 6 1/2 from the "C" pillar, I fell in love with the body but there was just way too much window,so I chopped the top, because the roof line is an unbroken line from the top of the windshield to the bottom of the trunk I had to do a tapered chop, which included lowering the trunk as well, but I only had to cut the roof in one place just above the back window, then slid the pieces down till the roof line came back, eventually it will get a big block Ford with a C-6 with a 9 inch in the back, I just can't leave anything alone!

Yeah, I always liked those old 40's Lincolns. I never got mine running and it went to the scrapyard. But, that was back in about 1962. Good luck with it and send some pics. We are not all totally locked into OD and stock

In what way do you mean, overall diameter? Or are you talking about the width of the shoe its' self? Front shoes are 2 1/2" wide, while rears are 3" wide. Please explain.

I got the frame pieces welded together the other day, a few minor differences, the GMC flange is 3 inches the Chevy flanges is only 2 1/2 so I had to grind the GMC down on a taper so they flow together, but it looks good and once the bed and spare and gas tank is mounted you won't be able to see it. Another problem I came across was the U joint for the Chevy rear end is a lot smaller then the GMC, but my parts guy at my local Parts Plus store was able to find me a conversion joint, and a local cabinet maker said if I brought all my tool box wood up to him with some pictures he would help me rebuild it, so things are coming along, starting to cool off which is nice, three hours of grinding yesterday wiped me out! What I meant is that for banjo axles, Chev and CCKW parts are the same. The brakes are different front to back, by Chev to CCKW in the same position are the same

How about swapping side to side on the Chevy backing plates, for some reason both of the chevy axles have messed up drivers side backing plates, it looks like they lost the wheels and slid on the road, so both are missing a little off the bottom, so if the passenger side will work on the drivers side I can steal one from the extra axle?

Well after a week off to fight the flu and then the weather turn cold and wet I was finally able to get back out and get some work done on the truck, I've ground down both frame rails and got them in primer, done a little body work on the cab where they had welded a DUWK wheel adapter to the side as a spare tire mount, the weight of the tire hanging there distorted the body panel and with the interior braces it's hard to be able to get them very straight, but they are close enough for a light coat of bondo to clean things up, since niether of the Chevies had an original gas tank I had to find some thing else, I had a GMC tank but it was just too big, it looked crowded, plus I just might get out and do some 4 wheeling and that big tank hung down quite a ways, so a friend gave mt this tank, I think it's from a 1/2 or 3/4 ton IHC, inside it looks like new and it fit the space between the battery box and back tire very nicely, it's only 20 gallons but I don't plan on doing redball express runs, beside I always carry a couple jerry cans, I ordered a new fuel pump from my local parts house, it should be here tomorrow, once I get it running I'm going to take it up and steam clean every thing so I can paint and detail the engine compartment before I put the front end on, to keep people guessing I'm going to use a chevy front bumper, and early chevy grill and unmarked chevy side panels, my history for this vehicle will be that it was built by bored motor pool personal from a combination of wrecked vehicles at the end of the war, some thing I'm sure took place. For the first time in over 30 years the open cab took a little drive today, just around the property, it's so much easier to get around then the CCKW's are, next week I'll take it up and steam clean the engine and trans, sand blast the frame, install the chevy bumper, then I can start putting the sheet metal back on. Buy the Engine Decals from Paul, they may not be heat resistant. And get your information over here or at CCKW.org. Having advice from those who have hands on experience is much more reliable than from that quoted from a TM with not one truck under his belt. Little if any good advice has been given, but the Decals are a major breakthrough and worth a try.
