It's Official, 6 Sept.'11, USS Iowa To L.A.

Post by AROOGA » Tue Sep 06, 2011 10:32 pm

Folks,

Well, finally. USS Iowa has found a home - Berth 87, San Pedro/L.A. SECNAV Mabus made the decision this date. The hard working folks/voluteers of the Pacific Battleship Center (PBC) deserve a lot of credit and showed everyone how to "do it".

I doubt if the membership of the G wrung the rag/chewed on a subject more than the USS Iowa and it's ultimate disposition - a lot of heartfelt commentary was offered - because we care.

SF,
T.

Good to hear she will have a new home as a museum. I wish Erie ,Pa would think and get a older navy ship.

I agree, They don't realize what they are loosing. I see her every time I head south to the bay area tied up in the mothball fleet near Martinez, Ca. I also remember when the Glomar Explorer was anchored out there. It was involved in a CIA coverup to rais a russian sub.

Recent article in local paper about Iowa relocation. Vallejo(Mare Island) was rejected because there are no other local tourist attractions to generate enough traffic. San Francisco was the preferred location, but SF refused to accept the Iowa because of the Navy policy on gays.

My Dad was stationed at Mare Island. A few years back we went to Vallejo and visited the naval museum their and took a tour at Mare Island. It's a shame they don't open it up to the public for a historical landmark museum.

I just read that the USS Iowa might not have been taken out of mothballs and awarded to the Museum in Los Angeles if it were not for the $3,000,000 given by the State of Iowa.
Way to go Iowa! Thank goodness someone still has some pride.
