Thanks Joe. I'll have to double check the data plate for a date. It seems it received a total upgrade when it went to a1. The R/N will be impossible to recover because all of my armor was sandblasted/stripped when it was restored. Thanks for the info.

Hi Kevin,

M3A1
Hood ?
Frame/data plate M3A1 0676w
Ord 25526

The MFGRs No 676 provides the info that that was the 676th M3A1 made by Diamond T. It would have been accepted in Nov, 1943. The "W" indicates a Winch model. I think the USA Number assigned would have been 4063787, but it would help to get a few confirms off the real thing. It would appear that nearly the entire postwar inventory of the long, M3-ish HTs, as well as M16s were rounded up & converted to M16A1 & A2 in the early 50s. Any chance you could find the USA Number stamped on the bumper of either of those?

M16
Hood ?
Frame/data plate 276576
Ord 1040

The White MFRs Nos are so spread out on the M16s that they seem useless for even guessing date of acceptance or USA Number. Since you are fortunate enough to know the Ord Serial Number, & it is below S/N 1104, it provides the info that it was the 1040th M13 made by White, accepted May 1943. If it has an original White M16 dataplate in there, I think that would indicate that it was one of 568 M13s that White converted to M16 in Aug, 1943. Just from info the guys have provided, it would appear that these units retained their original M13 Ord S/Ns & Reg Numbers after the conversion.

Joe,
Thanks for the reply.
I checked the data plate on the M16. It is brass and weathered but upon closer inspection.
Carriage, Motor Multiple Gun M13 the three was over-stamped with a six confirming your info that it was apparently a M13 prior to conversion to a M16. I will look carefully for any other clues.
? Not sure if you or Tom are managing the sticky but its been awhile since the data has been updated. I would be glad to help if needed.

Hi Tom,

Iv'e recently imported an M16 halftrack from Holland, unfortunately the main data plate is missing. The chassis no is 276270,interestingly looking at some of the HT chassis no on your list 276271 is listed.Any info you can give me regarding the chassis no would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

If you go up a few posts in this thread to June / July, you can see where Kevin & I talk about an M13 / M16 he has.

Anyway, I think 276270 indicates that that is another one that was originally built by White as an M13, most likely in May 1943, & then converted by them to M16 in Aug. Unfortunately, with White built Half Tracks & Scout Cars, there is no way to derive the Ordnance Serial Number or the USA Number if all you know is the chassis number (the White MFG's Number on an original dataplate). Based on data collected from other examples with known good Ordnance and / or USA Numbers, I would say that Ordnance Serial Number 980 / USA 4049213 would be within plus / minus 50 of the numbers originally assigned to yours.

Great, Stu. That would correspond to M13 Ord Serial Number 741, & give you an acceptance date of April, 1943. Earlier, Kevin mentioned that on his dataplate "Carriage, Motor Multiple Gun M13 the three was over-stamped with a six confirming your info that it was apparently a M13 prior to conversion to a M16." White converted 568 M13s to M16s in Aug 1943. The fact that you found the USA Number stamped on might be an indication that it was converted to M16A2 in the early 1950s, & then sent to Europe (Netherlands?) as MDAP.

Sorry I was so far off with my earlier guess about your numbers, but I'm finding more & more that there's not much order at all to the White Manufacturer's Numbers.

Joe,
Do you have a estimated hood number for the M13/16 Ord #1040? Vehicle has been overpainted with a thick coat of OD. I hope to recover the original hood number during paint removal.
What are the chances of getting all this new info added to the sticky?
