12 volt conversion
I have a 62 CJ5 with a m151 drive train (bought that way). Anyway it is set up as a split 24 volt (starter and ignition), 12 volt (lights etc.) electrical system. I'm very new to Jeeps so I don't know a lot about the 24 volt set up on the m151 parts. I'm thinking I probably would be better off to go to a straight 12 volt set up but I don't know where to get a 12 volt distributor and starter to work with. I can do a GM alternator conversion on the generator. I realize that my Jeep is a bastard / hybrid anyway so the changes are more practical for me. I'd love to get a purebred MUTT at some point but I can't afford that yet.
So, the question is: Where do I get a 12 volt starter and distributor for this engine?
Thanks,
Scott

Can't you just find a civilian one and replace everything ..

Re: 12 volt conversion
I'm still in the learning stages, but best I can tell, the M151 stuff is kind of unique, no civilian counterparts. I've still got a lot of research to do but that's my understanding so far. The conversion in this jeep is kind of unique too, but the link above was helpful and I have worked out a deal.
As time passes I may try to find the correct drivetrain parts but couldn't afford them if I found them right now. I've also started doing a few other changes being I've already got a hybrid setup. I took out the foot pedals and added pivot pedals. This facilitated the addition of a brake booster/master cylinder and also hydrolic clutch components....I'll post pictures as it comes together. Power steering is becoming a possibility.....

Re: 12 volt conversion
Keep in mind that this engine only puts out 71 horsepower at best. You might also find that the vacuum needed to power the booster will cause running problems. These carburetors are very sensitive to any vacuum loss.

Re: 12 volt conversion
I'm hoping it won't be too much trouble. I used a Nissan Sentra booster and have a one way valve in the line to ease on the pull. Another thing I am looking into though is to get a downdraft carb instead of the side draft. I'm not to sure that it will be possible yet but I've got some ideas.....

Most Japanese parts from the last 20 years are made here in the USA. Nissan plant is in TN, Toyota has Plants in California, Ohio and AL......
They have more American made parts than so called American cars.

True, but looks who owns and profits from them. The Japanese. Just my 2 cents.

Made in Japan and assembled in USA. Only so they can avoid the import taxes.

I was a foreign car mechanic for many years before becoming a deputy. I have a lot of respect for Japanese cars and the workmanship they put into them. My heart goes out to Japan in their current troubles. They are high on the prayer list.
