Re: Modified NDT or NDCC tread tires
I have customers with the STA tread up here, but the original Goodyear 700X16 with the similar tread is not available, they do show up here and there in onesie and twosies at old warehouses.
FYI Armstrong also sold a similar tread called "Miracle Extra Traction" I have sold a few sets of both Armstrong and Goodyear over the years. (I can hear you )

Re: Modified NDT or NDCC tread tires
My M38A1 came with 6.50 - 16 Super Lug tires that need to be replaced. Lots of cracks. Can I assume that anything in the 6.50-16 to 7.50-16 range would fit fine? I plead ignorant of what the first number means.

The 1/2" variation from the standard 7.00" tire cross section (section width) will not harm you. It can cause a minor variance in the speedometer.

It is not the "width" that causes variance in the speedometer, but "diameter".Cuz wrote:The 1/2" variation from the standard 7.00" tire cross section (section width) will not harm you. It can cause a minor variance in the speedometer.

We all know that bubba. And we all know that a 7.00-16 is taller than a 6.50-16 just as well as we all know the 7.50-16 is taller than the 7.00-16.

referred to this resultant increase in height that is not an apparent component of the trade sizing numbers. It can cause a minor variance in the speedometer.

Re: Modified NDT or NDCC tread tires
"It can cause a minor variernce in the speedometer" you are clearly referring to width, and width, has no effect on the speedometer, but diameter does.
No big deal tho and I am not going to dwell on it.

Re: Modified NDT or NDCC tread tires
I understood what was being said,I would think that someone with "65 years experience servicing jeeps , " would know that a 7-50 was taller than a 7-00. I'm just a backyard mechanic /tinkerer ,not even, 65 years old,and I knew that! On a somewhat related note, tires of the same size ,ie 10-00/20 ,for example can be different heights in different brands. To simplfy that a Goodyear 10-00/20, may not be the height as Firestone 10-00/20.

Re: Modified NDT or NDCC tread tires
Jeeper Jim,
If it is the European derivative of the NDT such as those on the M-38A1, then you may want to round up some of the nice 600X16 Swiss NDT tires as found on the Swiss MBT trailers that have been returned to the US. They make an excellent MB/GPW/CJ-2A tire. There have been quite a few Swiss return MBT trailers sold and am sure there are a few owners that will sell the Swiss tires they have removed.
I have two new ones that I removed from my Swiss return in favor of the new Goodyear 600X16 NDT's that I was saving for MBT restoration. My new 600X16 Swiss takeoffs are not for sale at this time due to the issue of shipping.
The OEM tire for the CJ-2A thru 1948 was 600X16 Goodyear All Service (NDT).

The lik above is a realy nice tire but a 12 ply rating which would probably make a CJ2A or 3A ride like it had concrete wheels.
Any thoughts. $93 each plus shipping. They would get a lot of miles but am not sure about the years of service before dry rotting.

Re: Modified NDT or NDCC tread tires
You may find that wet traction and stopping with that tread and 12Ply Rating is not ideal on a 2500# Jeep.

Re: Modified NDT or NDCC tread tires
Go back to the web site and blow up the picture of the tire there to about 350 or 400%.
The tread does have a lot of grooves in it and way more than the old NDT and NDCC
tires.
I do agree that it is not the best of tread patterns but I believe that other than the ride being rough due to the 12 ply rating, it would be
a more tolerable noise level over those mud and snow tires that have been referred to on this thread.
The chances of me finding mud and snow here are very low I'm sad to say (really really sad to say).
I LOVE the snow and miss it very much.
Regards,
Jim (jeeperjim)

Re: Modified NDT or NDCC tread tires
I have siped my NDTs using a box knife:
... It took me 20 minutes a tire. The picture shows them freshly cut. As you run the tires, they open up some. This by no means makes them like a radial tire but I think it does help some. I am not afraid to drive them in the snow, but I still drive very carefully:
I was trying to keep them looking as close to stock as possible. If you don't mind going farther, here is another tread that is a significant improvement:
I did this with a hot knife or tire groover. The tires are 750-16 NDT.
Road noise does increase.
