Restoring Jerry Can Insides

Post by rejomj » Sun Dec 26, 2010 10:42 am

Just got two Jerry cans. One is for water and other gas.

The water can has 80% of the lining left in the insides. The rest is peeled off and I can see the rust.
Can you please suggest a way on how to clean and preserve the insides. I am not actually going to use it for storing / drinking water.

Thanks
Rejo

Since you are not going to put water into it, but are mainly interested in stopping it from rusing out....I would get on the internet and find a food-grade liner that can be put into your can that is close to the slightly cream/yellowish color that the original was. Once you find somthing like that, you can sand blast the insides and follow the instructions for use or whatever they suggest to do in preparation for the product. If you DO find a good food-grade liner, please let us know how the project goes.

Otherwise you can probably use something for gas tanks like POR-15 but it will no longer be safe to use for drinking water.

I did 3 water cans a couple of months ago as per instructions on a reenacting forum. http://ww2reenactors.proboards.com/inde ... read=32360

It was a simple as sand blasting the inside, priming with Rustoleum, a color coat with Rustoleum (close to the original cream color), and a final 3 coats with a food grade sealer obtained from a Bee Keeper supply. It is called Camcote. http://www.betterbee.com/Products/Honey ... poxy-Paint.

I followed the directions as per the poster and it worked great.

I had a friend test it and there is no evidence of contaminates. I have one with water in it in the basement that I will test again after 6 months sitting to see if there are issues.

I will probably not drink this water but I feel that it is potable water that can be used in most other needs.

How in the world did you sandblast the inside?! I have 3 water cans that I want to restore to a useable state but can't figure out how to get the old lining out.

I have a pressurized 100 pound pot type blaster. Worked easy and made for a much easier cleanup as it contained the media in the can.

I also only went after the peeling and rust spots. They were in fair inside condition to start with.

Thanks a lot guys for the advise.

Right after I posted a thread here someone mentioned about the food-grade liner that I could use. I am going to it out on my water can.

I think it should also work for my gas can too :?:

The food-grade liner may not be gasoline resistant. If the gasoline dissolves the liner, it could cause carburetor problems.
I would test it first. You could line a tin can with it. Then after the liner cures, add gasoline.
If you have a safe place to store it, you can cover the can (to slow evaporation) and check it for several days to make sure the liner doesn't degrade.

I agree with Roy. Don't use the Camcote in fuel cans.

If you plan on restoring them for use get a product like POR-15 for fuel tanks. I have used this product on my LWB CCKW with great success. http://www.por15.com/Fuel-System-Restor ... oducts/12/

Tom,

I can't remember who posted it but someone half filled a jerry can with gravel, strapped it to the rear wheel of their jeep having jacked it up first, and left the wheel turning slowly with the engine ticking over, After a while then inside of the can was as clean as a whistle.

Derek.

When the lady isn't home wrap the can up with the derusting particles in it , wrap it in an old blanket or piece of foam. secure it in the blanket with a belt or something. and put it in the dryer, throw some pillows in to take up space so it don't bounce around, Let it run on no heat for about an hour. Check it out and determine if it needs more time.

Hy

Some folks do this with a concrete mixer

Image

wrap it on and let it roll , after cleaning you can put some paint or coat in it , and the rolling will go on ......... its the best chance to bring the coat in every corner of the can or bike tank or what else ........

Anyone tried using electrolysis to derust a can? Battery charger, neg cable clamped to the can, positive cable clamped to a piece of rebar dangled inside the can, and fill it with a mix of water and washing soda.
