M1038 Project

Postby Ted Gates » Tue Dec 07, 2010 8:51 am

As some of you might have seen, a nice M1038 arrived as a winter project since all my others are out working for the winter. This M1038 is a very nice truck with your typical neglect (not abuse) since the auction. Its a runner but it needs the typical hmmwv things done: glow plugs, control box, ground harness, steering components updated, electrical clean up, new lights all the way around, full pm and flushes, etc. All things to be done over the holidays. This truck was painted sometime in the 1990's (there was still tape on data plates) and had the interior insulation replaced then as well. The frame rails are in very good condition. The po had the brakes done and the ip rebuilt. However the parking brake needs complete replacement. The pads dragged on the rotor to the point that the rotor is shaped like a dinner plate. You'd think that they would of smelled something? Anyway that all gets gutted. It has like new GSA tires which I will either put on 12 bolts or sell them and get MT radials for the hmmwv look.

So far I have stripped the 2 man setup off it (see 4-sale section) and started pulling parts to convert back into a 4 man. I sucked up a shopvac full of leaves, dirt and walnut shells! Founds some important take-off parts in the clutter and removed all the old stinky canvas seats. Anyway, enjoy the pictures and I will post more as wrenches get turned.

Ted,
If I remember correctly, BD was some type of grading system used to evaluate the condition before moth-balling. I had seen it on a few other M1038's that came out of the original Georgia Auction.

Thanks SinDiesel, I figured it had something to do with storage. I guess it will have to stay on the truck for originality.

George, if you want to buy your own present then pm me! lol

I have not had time since post to turn wrenches on this truck. Plus it was 8 degrees F this morning!

Got a brand new doghouse cover for that rig as well.....just let me know if you run into anything. Saved all of this older style stuff thinking I wiould do another truck, but not so sure after this m1113 I'm doing now.....it's tiring (but fun). Good luck and again, nice truck, man....

Thanks,
Freddie

Hi Ted,

Dilvoy is wrong!

BD stands for Brad Dunstan, that's actually my truck
I was wondering where I put it.

Cheers

Funny stuff Brad! I'll be sure to remove it now. :P

I have not worked on the truck for several days (family and getting a cold). I did get to use the MOG to push the snow around the property though! 10F again today.

Hmmmm.... 10 degrees Ted?
It was 85 degrees down here today.

I start summer vacation next week.
Time to work on the Humvee again.
This vacations jobs are to make a hood mounted pioneer kit, make a GMV rear and fit a new reversing camera set up.
Not as ambitious as the last few years, but should still keep me occupied.

Cheers

Yeah Brad, it is winter and last Sunday/Monday was just plain knarly outside! My shop though has heat and can get toasty warm when I out there. However I still have not been able to work on truck and my next trip goes over the weekend so no wrench turning again. :x
