Frost, in all the years I've been researching M151s, I have yet to come across a 12volt version of the starter. That doesn't mean they don't exist, but someone out there has probably had a 24v unit rewound.
As there ae still lots of M151 parts for sale, you need to ask yourself why would you spend on a rewind instead of keeping the vehicle stock 24 volt? There's a tipping point at which it is cheaper to keep the vehicle 24volt rather than go to 12volt.

I have a prestolite 12 volt starter on my M151 engine. Conversion was done to accommodate the 12 volt system of my CJ that the M151 drive train is in. I don't know where it came from, but they do exist.

Hello Scott,
that proves the old mutt saying...."Never say Never". Does your 12v starter still have its dataplate? Is there any information about the rewiring? Or does it give a model number? It is possible that somewhere out there, there was a military 12volt application that used this starter. Thanks....

And I have NOS 12 Volt Distributors for same. Hawk Missile Loader used a Mutt Engine, but I think it was still 24V. And the Army may have had a welder or Generator with 12 V Mutt system.

This thread id from the g838 site from when I bought my 12 volt starter. Maybe the seller can still get them or help you contact someone who does.

No need to rewire, just change the bulbs and gauges and starter and alternator and change to point type ignition. The starter and coil are the main problem. I know there are people running a 24 volt coil on 12 volts and it is working, I have not had time to try it myself to verify. he issue may be that as voltage decreases the amperage increases for a set load. This may or may not overheat the coil. The way I see around that is to change to a CD ignition system like a MSD setup.

Well if you are asking about a new wiring harness for the vehicle you can buy NOS wiring harness's for an A2 for decent prices from most of the surplus dealers. That would be the best way to go since it is all there and numbered. Is your harness bad or just the bulbs? Converting completely to 12 volt can be done but it will probably cost more than getting the 24 volt system working unless you are missing all of the components.

Well, You have an A1. To get a proper A1 harness you need to go aftermarket and you are looking at 1200.00!!! OR, You can use an A2 harness and just add the #77 circuits for the oil pressure safety switch and fuel pump. You need to extend a couple wires for the turn signals and make a minor modification for the 25 amp charging system. OR, You could put a 60 amp alternator in and plug it right into the A2 harness. You would need to go with the A2 pulleys and three belts. You are in Kansas so I would suggest calling Red River or Rapco for the parts.

Looks like a A2 harness is a cheaper route. I wonder how much Red River sells the for. ?
BTW I hate electrical work. Wish I could pay someone to fix my issues.

I would gladly come out and do it for you just to get out of NJ, The missus might have a little problem with that though considering she is still working and would have to stay behind.
