A1 rear camber adjusting shims

Post by MrMVS » Sun Sep 02, 2012 7:26 am

I made a camber adjusting shim for the rear of the Mutt (A1), their fairly simple to make ,and when installed it takes out about 90% of the tire lean... Start by making a pattern of the rear control arm flange (the part the bearing carrier bolts to) it has three bolt holes and has a banana shape, next trace the shape including the three bolt holes on a piece of 3/8 x 2' flat stock,(you will need 4 of these) shape each piece into the flange shape, drill the three holes in each (shim) then clamp flat in a vise,so that one end is elevated so the bottom of the stock is level with the top of the other stock at the other end, grind the whole flat side to make a shim that is 3/8 thick on one end tapering to 0 on the other end, this will give you a shim that is banana shaped 3/8' thick on the bottom and tapers to say 1/16 "or less on the top,the holes in the center and bottom must be drilled to 1/2 " to compensate for the angle difference ,the shims bolt between the rear control arm and the bearing carrier, spacing the bearing carrier out at the bottom, thus moving the tire in at the top, I have made several sets of these and they have worked really well ,adding stability, and also helps on tire ware, takes a bit of labor grinding to make them, but its worth it...give it a try!...

The guys who attend Weare, NH had this down pat 15 years ago. Makes an M151A1 stand tall like an M151A2.

The first time I made these were back in the 80's they seem to work very well and have not had any bad reports back from the ones that bought them... :D

Would you contact me and let me know how much for a kit? I am restoring a 1961 MUTT and that would be just the ticket to adjust that camber. Kevin.

Maybe he realized the liability involved. Yes they will straighten out the wheels when at rest but any compression of the suspension at all will put the wheels in negative camber. Full compression will be severe negative camber which could possibly break outer u-joints. The stock suspension was designed to hit neutral camber at average load, the same average load with these adapters will have the tires squatting pretty bad.

When redesigning the wheel you have to make sure it will still roll safely.

I personally like the look of the M151 and M151A1 when at rest. One of my favorite things about them and as Rickf said, it goes away once under motion. They were designed this way for a reason by highly experienced group of engineers.

Gee wiz, yet another good point came out about Mod's....
I didn't think about the "load" under the modification of the suspension. That's definitely something to think about, especially if your gonna carry stuff like radio equipment, an extra 10 gallon gas can with gas, some degree of tools, and a passenger or two. It all adds up in there somewhere, and if its already compressed, I can see where the problems could arise.
