More m-151 conversions

Post by acudanut » Tue Mar 08, 2011 6:43 am

I would like to rewire my M-151. Maybe ? use a old mail jeep electronic's. Go 12 volt. Have a easier drop in distributer, starter and alternator and make the gauges all easier to fix and find parts for....Before I get hate mail. (I PLAN ON KEEPING EVERYTHING O.E IN A PLASTIC SEALED TUB). Doing this conversion (if possible) will make it easier and cheaper to fix on trips ect.
What do you guys think ?

The original parts are so easy to find and in the case of gauges much cheaper. I would just stay with stock. My opinion.

The distributer does not look user friendly and what about setting points, cap and rotor ?
Having two batteries is going to double the costs too. Finidng a alt. on the go could ruin a trip :?

Well the alternator is the same one used on all M series vehicles from 71 through the early 90's. The distributor for an A2 would be electronic ignition which is pretty reliable and cheap enough to carry a spare. The cap is not as intimidating as it looks, there is a regular cap under the cover. The biggest problem with these is the coil, Use a NOS one and keep a spare.
A conversion is not all that bad, you can use the existing wiring and light housings and just change the bulbs. Fabricate a bracket for a GM alternator. I have seen these 24 volt coils run on 12 volts. I have not had one on a scope to see what the output is but if it runs good I guarantee you will NEVER burn up that coil. The gauges would be the main issue.

Okay, next item I will need is a gas tank. Any ideas...I don't want rusted out junk.

No aftermarket radiators. You can get radiators or fuel tanks from most of the suppliers like TNJ Murray, Frontline Military Vehicles, Saturn Surplus, etc. Or you can take both the radiator and fuel tank to a radiator shop and have them work them over. You can also get a fuel tank liner kit and do it yourself. I have several friends who like to play around with and restore old tractors. Relining the fuel tank on some old tractors is often the only way to go, as spare parts for them dried up decades ago.

Even if you could get an aftermarket radiator it would cost about the same as one from the vendors. Or a recore for that matter.
