1940 Plymouth Find

Post by Timothy Brent » Sat Aug 23, 2008 4:40 pm

I bought this 1940 Plymouth for $1500 a couple of weeks ago. It starts and runs.

I want to turn it into a Staff Car. Any thoughts or direction as to restoration and vendors would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Tim

Go to Hemmings Motor News online or get a copy of the mag at most good news stands. If it's not in there, it's not anywhere....

Thanks Steve. I should clarify that I have a good friend and great restoration guy in Richard Duque' who has done beautiful ground up restorations, most recently a friends '45 army jeep from the ground up.

At this point I just want to get her in driving shape with a basic restoration. I'm going to "work with him" to restore the car.

I'm mostly interested in vendors and sources for anything and everything about the car. Thanks for the tip, I will check out Hemmings Motor News.

Thats a helluva deal for a running 40's vintage car. Looks like you got the makings for a real neat staff car. Keep us posted

Good news: The car starts, purrrsss, transmission works as she went up the street and reversed back.

Bad news: Needs a new front cross member. The search is on!

At this point my plan is to make it a stateside USAAF Staff Car. It has all the chrome in exceptional condition (excet for the bumpers). I hate to cover it up. I was thinking of going with a semi-gloss OD paint and re-doing the upholstery in the original mohair fabric. Of course i'll go with the stars and ID #'s on the hood sides. I just picked up two tear drop shaped marker lights for the tops of the front fenders. I'd like to acquire a siren, spotlight and fog lamps as well.

Got my cross member. It was right here on the Calif. Central Coast! Came from a '37 DeSoto. Bought the whole chassis for $400. Found it in an obscure little junk yard.

Hi,

You found a great car at a great price. I really like the fender lines. You asked for some venders. Here are some:

http://oldmoparts.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.robertsmotorparts.com/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://waldronexhaust.com/shop/index.ph ... =61_52_352" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you want to convert to 12 volt or modernize the engine, etc., let me know and I'll give you some more sites. I've used the first site the most. Also, I have a catalog for interiors. Their web site is:

http://www.Kanter.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hope this is helpful.

Hello Tim

You are going to love driving the car. I have a 1941 Plymouth 4 door P12 that I bought from Ernie, a fellow "G" member a little over a year ago. When I got the car it was black and with Navy markings. I am keeping it as I got it. You can find a lot of pictures of black Navy Staff Cars. Everyone has Army Staff Cars, but by keeping it black with the Navy markings you really stand out. At the begining of the staff car thread I have pictures posted.

Enjoy and please do keep us posted.

Image

Hi Tim,

I think this is what Carmen means a black Navy car. This picture was taken in July 1943 in Fremantle Western Australia. The lady is called Betty and was an Australian driver working with the US forces she also drove ambulances. I also have a photo of my friends Dodge taken in the same place in 2001 will post a photo later. Notice the chrome bumpers.

Good luck with your resto Tim.
Dave
