GPW 109071/268547

Post by TwoCar » Tue Feb 28, 2017 6:35 am

Hello.

I found this "barn find" GPW over the weekend. It's more like the barn fell on the GPW.

Anyway, the frame and engine serial numbers match, "GPW 109071", but once I removed the layers of paint from the glove box data plate it is stamped with a later number, "268547".

A good friend of mine suggested the idea that the location where the shipping plate is placed, could actually have been a rebuild tag. Unfortunately, whatever was there is not there anymore.

Is there anyway other way to prove this? I couldn't find a rebuild tag on the engine block.

Thanks guys!

Wow, definitely a rough ole' girl, but it looks like you were able to find a solid parts jeep! I've got GPW-108175 with a DOD of 4-14-43. I'd bet this one isn't too far off of mine, maybe a week or two younger?

Nice find!

I don't see a hole pattern for the rebuild plate on the dash. They are twice as long as the shipping plate (see below) and are typically mounted over where the shipping plate was located.

During the govt rebuild programs, I believe they took everything apart. So the chance of a matching engine and frame staying together during the reassembly was slim. I would guess that sometime during this jeep's civilian life, someone replaced the original Ford tub with a later ACM2 tub that we see now.

Best of luck with the project!

Dexter

Hello Sean and Dexter.

Thanks for the information! I was able to uncover the gusset number - 203874 and the gusset has three holes. How do these pieces fit into the puzzle? To be honest, I am ignorant when it comes to tub types, production time frames and their serial numbers.

Thanks again!

Hello,
Nice find but complex.
Frame and engine are matching March 1943.
The tub is an ACM II from March 1945.
The toolbox plate is from May 1945.
Matching Chassis and Engine have value. Look for 1943 Ford body and make a repro new toolbox plate.
Sell the 1945 toolbox plate as well as the ACMII body (once you did find the Ford tub).
Or sell the engine/frame combination :-)

Anyway, interesting find!

Greetings

Hello Hans.

Good suggestions, but the frame is very very rough and has more patches than frame. :-) I'm surprised that it didn't break in half when I was loading it. I'll post some new pictures once I unload it from my trailer and hopefully in one piece.

Thanks,

Mike

Hey Mike
I did not think you had room for another jeep!I just happen to have a Ford tub that would work great on your newest addition to the herd! :D

HAHA Doug!

I think you should take the engine and frame off my hands to match up with your Ford tub instead! :D Great hearing from you!

Post pics of the frame number and perhaps Tom W. will see it ad be able to tell you more about which factory built your jeep. tI might be a March '43 or maybe an April '43 however. GPW 108552 is an April 1943 Louisville jeep for instance. The data plate/glove box door.... is from a later jeep and perhaps is original to that tub.

It may not have a rebuild tag because it may not have been in a program and the rolling chassis with matching engine/frame numbers just got that tub later in civilian hands.

dfast, that is great!!! Very close indeed!

Chuck, I spoke with Tom a little while ago and he determined from his GPW studies and data bases that GPW 109071 should have come from the Richmond, Ca. assembly plant in April '43, and the body and data plate should have come from the Louisville, Ky. assembly plant. I wish I knew the story of how the two came together.

Hello TwoCar,

Interestingly my 42 GPW Barn Find had also had it's data plates replaced with ones from a later GPW. The Tub was correct for a 42 Ford and not a later ACM, so at some point in it's life, for reasons unknown, someone either changed the plates or replaced missing ones?

Cheers

Richard
