Nice original GPW ! I would much rather have one in this condition than a restored one. Hope you decide to preserve it. I would hold off on removing the undercoating. Correct me if Im wrong but didnt late ACM bodies have a tar undercoating in the wheel wells? Years ago I parted out a very late GPW with this same undercoating.

Mr Ray is quite correct in saying that. You can also find a type of wax-oil which got sprayed onto the inner wings and the inside of the hood/bonnet on a number of late gpw's maybe someone reading this will confirm if they have that on their gpw. It was sprayed on quite thin so you very often see runs and little puddles of the stuff, where it collected on the frame or splash shield.

I'm certainly going to preserve it, it's just needs some work just to stop further decline. As with most jeeps, it's had a hard life, its had many owners since military release in 47 and bits have gone missing like the shipping plate, first aid bracket, fire extinguisher bracket. But saying that for a vehicle that is 71 years old it pretty good. Especially when you consider these vehicles were tools not treasured items.

Hi,

Thanks for checking the bolts, to bad he has been taken apart. Otherwise, we could conclude for once and for all, certainly late models, didn't have f marked bolts. Please keep posting those detailed pictures as I'm restoring a may 45 GPW.
Remarkable you have fuel strainer on cowl, Ford pintle hook, no deep mud exhaust.

There's very few F marked bolts on this one which seems to be the concensus with late GPW's, I do think most of it is original though but I guess I'll never know how much.

I will document everything going forward as and when bits are removed.

Hi,

'certainly late models, didn't have f marked bolts'
Sorry but that isn't correct from what I found on my GPW. I would say that 70% of the remaining bolts on my May 45 GPW are F marked including bolts like the bell housing dowel bolts, transfer case bolts, half shaft bolts and many engine bolts. The bolts that aren't ford marked on my GPW were bolts like air filter and fuel filter brackets, hand grips, rear foot rests and diff covers. It would appear to me that perhaps more bolts than earlier GPW's are not F marked but to say that 'certainly late models, didn't have f marked bolts' is not correct from my experience.

thanks

Hi Matt,

I meant that the bumper Bilts certainly weren't marked. My 45 gpw had f marked bolts on fender to frame, spare wheel carrier, transfer case, ... body Grab handles and most of the other "hardware" wasn't marked.

I think I've read several times that F marked bumper bolts did simply not exist?

I've been doing a bit more colour investigation. I removed the lubrication chart holder which has revealed this. Lovely original OD which matches pretty well what I found under the underseal under the arches although the shade is a touch darker. I guess this is the first time it's seen the light in 71 years.

Also for those F fanatics out there, it's a very subtle stamping on the hood hinge.

Nice Charlie,
just like I found on mine, pre painted lube holder assembly and grease gun bracket attached to a primed hood and then sprayed with OD. You should find primer under all the brackets on the firewall too (fuel, air cleaner etc), if it has been left untouched. You should also find internal/external star washers under the air filter bracket and hopefully primer underneath the crash pads, although your body handle bolts look like they might have been replaced so perhaps the crash pads have been played with too at some point, would be inserting to see

A beauty indeed Charlie.
She's in good hands, and that's good to know :)
I just wonder if she has a Norwegian postwar history? Looking at the black rust preventer coating inside the wheelhouse.
Mostly all of the jeep that served in our army were coated like that, under the body and on frame. The green color looks familiar a well as the green slight layer of paint over the engine compartment.

Hi Charlie:
You have a wonderful GPW!!
My GPW is 266955.
I understand my GPW came from the Dallas Plant. Do you know where your was built?
My jeep has many of the same features as yours.
My GPW also had an undercoating. I thought it was a post war application.
I noticed that the radio suppression box had washers on the box mount.
I thought that only MB's had this. Maybe its a modification.
I had few F marked bolts on the jeep.

Also I did a frame off restoration and had the similar orange primer paint.

Thank you for posting your pictures.
Cheers!!
Pat

Hi again Charlie,

Way back at the beginning , your Jeep had a mirror arm still fitted. Regardless if you believe it original or not, can you please share a few photos of it?

I’m trying to get some info and develop a pattern of what was fitted to what.

Thanks,
Ian.
