Original paint script WILLYS
Just picked up this 42' willys script. Has numbers visible on the back panel and hood. I am thinking of removing and selling the hardtop in favor of the original windshield frame that came with it. Also has gas heater mounted on rear fender.

From here it looks like somewhere did a fairly good job of keeping Bubba away over the years. Very cool!

Definitely, a nice candidate for a survivor clean-up. My vote is to carefully clean and detail it, but not restore it. With thousands of restored Jeeps in the world already, we have enough, so that survivors like this don't need to be added to that pile.
Jeeps like these will always draw the most interest over the cookie cutter, dipped in a large vat of paint, restored Jeep......Once it's restored, it's history and the story of it's life is lost.. I understand many Jeeps are not nice enough to save as a survivor. Your Jeep isn't one of those.
You can see why I like survivors:

Yep, 000 steel wool + WD-40 buff would mellow the rust and bring that OD back wonderfully. Very nice find.

How would you save the floors? If it needs to be patched up with new metal would you spray it?
Thanks

I would try and arrest the progress of the rust with chemicals, before I'd replace metal, unless the floor boards are soft and difficult to drive the Jeep with them like they are. If you have to replace metal, you can age the new paint to make the repairs not so obvious.....

Re: Original paint script WILLYS
if you are going for the "arrested developement" where you don't really restore it as suggested above, your paint looks pretty good. I would just mix up some DAWN dishwashing soap/water (the greatest cheap grease cutter without using gasoline or other petroleum products) and a section of Scotchbrite pad.
Just soap up and lightly scrub a section and rinse off and let air dry. If it is removing the oxidized layer you may be surprised at the color change to the OD once the oxidation is removed. Depending on the results you can gauge how much rubbing it takes to remove the oxidation on the rest of the jeep.
A power washing under the hood may clean up the grease/grime under there and underneath the tub/axles.
Be sure to confirm the USA number on the rear panel where the gas can carrier had been added then removed. the fact the white STAR back there has been painted over indicates the jeep has been painted at least once in that area after it was delivered or surplussed out.
Nice one!

I think you may be on to something Chuck. The number on the back panel appears to be 8 digits long (20212X24). Shouldn't a jeep of that age have a USA number with only 7 digits?Chuck Lutz wrote:Be sure to confirm the USA number on the rear panel where the gas can carrier had been added then removed. the fact the white STAR back there has been painted over indicates the jeep has been painted at least once in that area after it was delivered or surplussed out.
Regardless, it's a beautiful jeep in wonderful condition! I'm jealous!
