Re: 1943? MB project
I remover the sheet metal from the inside of the drivers side. Only uncovered small spots of rust and some poorly done patches.

Re: 1943? MB project
I was feeling motivated after removing the inner metal in a decent amount of time so I decided to tackle the added layer on the back. Honestly super bummed at the amount of rust I uncovered. It was very time consuming but I'm glad I am getting it done.

Re: 1943 MB 209528 project
I removed more sheet metal today exposing more surface rust and rust holes. The body itself has numerous dents throughout. I've never done any sort of body work so I was wondering what your guys opinions are. What should I do once the remainder of the sheet metal is removed? I will start on the drivers side once I'm done with the back.

Conrad, you may as well pull the rest of it off to see where you stand.Having no experience, you should try to find someone who knows some sheet metal methods, preferably jeep sheet metal...to at least advise if not help you. You'll need to know which parts can be saved, etc, before you get out the hammer & dolly.
Keep posting your pics also, this forum can help. There have been rougher bodies fixed. You are about to learn some new skills-like most of us have...

Re: 1943 MB 209528 project
Hello Conrad,
I am pretty new into this also but in the meantime I have restored two tubs.
I have used plain sheet metal 18gauge (1,25 mm) thickness for easy to replace parts (flat and easy forms) that were rusted away.
For more difficult forms I did buy repro replacement sections. I did learn to weld ...
If I were you I would replace your rear with a repro rear section. There is too much wrong with what I see on the picture. If you cut out the rusted parts you are left with nothing
Enjoy!
Hans
PS Show us the pictures of the others sections of your tub I and people will tell you to repair or to replace.
PS2 See my restoration thread (link in signature) for some examples of parts replacements

Re: 1943 MB 209528 project
Thank k you both for your input I really appreciate it. I will post photos of the sides when I remove Bubba's siding. My dad is a very experienced welder and has already expressed plans of cutting and replacing panels. He wants to keep as much of it original as possible.

I hope your dad has a lot of time
You should take some welding lessons yourself. It is a lot of fun.
Good luck.

Re: 1943 MB 209528 project
So I took a break from removing sheet metal and did a few other minor things today. Removed the grim from the windshield frame and removed the heater. Are the heaters worth anything? Or is it scrap? Also put the headlights in so they aren't just hanging. Reinstalled the air filter as well. I plan on cleaning it out but want to do my research first so I don't screw it up haha.i was also curious how the radiator hoses are originally routed so I can get that done not that the heater is removed.

I have been wanting to do that for a while now, I just haven't had the time. but I should do it soon so I can do more with the jeep!htc wrote:D_Conrad wrote: My dad is a very experienced welder and has already expressed plans of cutting and replacing panels. Re: 1943 MB 209528 project
The best way to learn to weld: grab scrap metal in all different shapes and sizes and run a million beads. For each bead you run, you'll begin to learn the best settings on the welder, and the best technique for ensuring it's a strong and reliable weld. I was lucky and spent a summer welding aluminum livestock semi-trailers. Getting hired with zero experience, I was "taught" by spending hours practicing on scraps, then being thrown onto the line to do it for real. Another important point, even if your weld looks like crap, or you blow a hole through the metal, 99 out of 100 times, it can be ground down and done over againD_Conrad wrote:I have been wanting to do that for a while now, I just haven't had the time. but I should do it soon so I can do more with the jeep!htc wrote:D_Conrad wrote: My dad is a very experienced welder and has already expressed plans of cutting and replacing panels. Re: 1943 MB 209528 project
Made some progress. Got a set of 4 original combat rims, cats eye marker lights and a broken but correct steering wheel. I replaced the right fender but for some reason it will not line up with the grille once bolted to the frame. Is my frame bent? Also I'm nor sure what it is or if it's meant to be there but there is something that sits behind the air filter that is preventing it from fitting correctly. Ideas?

Re: 1943 MB 209528 project
Here is the best photo I have at the moment of the fender. It's sitting too low. I also got an original hood. It's off a GPW but still better than the Cj hood I had before.

Re: 1943 MB 209528 project
Assembled more of the engine. Got a correct oil filter and I got the air filter installed. Half way saved for a new floor because the one it has now was done very poorly and the gas petal can not be mounted. Thank Bubba. Once the floor is installed I will begin engine work to get it running. Once it cools down a little I will continue removing the sheet metal surrounding the tub. Hope the frame will not be disappointing once the tub is removed to replace the floor. Fingers crossed! Theres also a gap between the bottom of the hood and the top of the fender. I have seen photos of there being no gap and others with a similar gap. Is there a correct or incorrect fitting or does it just vary? Lastly the combat rims I got came with the one in the pictures. Is this a military wheel or is it from a Cj?

Re: 1943 MB 209528 project
Due to work and life in general I sadly haven't been able to work on the jeep much. I did get a chance to reproduce the nomenclature plate. Pretty bummed I double stamped the "5" but it will have to do until I can get a new one.
