Bit more work, the intake manifold is GPW but the exhaust is unmarked. The valve cover is a replacement ford stamped one but looking at the one that came off the motor I think it is the original as it was ford grey and perhaps has a mis-stamped ford f on it, I might swap them back over..

Some important progress has been made and after the jeep body is shipped out tomorrow to the guy who's going to rebuild it for me i'm reaching something of a milestone!

The frame was originally sprayed as a component on its own and then pieces were built into it, some of these pieces have required spraying once they were fitted, like the track rod ends and spring hangers, and the rear axle required respraying as the original paint I used was not correct and I didn't like it. The spraying had to occur before the motor was fitted and before the brake lines were fitted etc and so I was held up a bit by this. I'm not a great fan of spraying as it requires so much prep and tidy work and so I was not looking forward to the job, the prep work was especially critical on an already assembled frame as there would be grease and oil over various bits of it from assembly. A few weeks ago I started cleaning the whole assembly down using a paint brush and kerosene, this worked really well and the kerosene did not touch the enamel paint, I let the frame dry for a week or so and repeated the process until all the grease and oil was removed along with any dirt. I then started careful masking as I did not want any OD to get on my Ford Grey transmission parts, obviously originally the Grey parts were dropped in to an already painted assembly but due to space constraints this wasn't possible for me. I made sure that the bolts joining the grey and OD parts didn't get sprayed as they would not have been originally.

The spraying went very well and I laid the OD enamel nice and thick like they did originally, overall the finish has turned out just how I wanted but as I have to remove some components again it is unfortunately inevitable that some of the paint will get damaged in the future but theres not much I can do about that!

Some of the masking had yet to be removed in the photos below and although the change from a distance is not that noticeable, it's up close in detail where I know that the paint has been touched up and unpainted bits have been covered where the difference has been made

Matt sometimes the hard way is all we have...btw,those pics of the engine in the sun really sparkle...we often don't have a way to duplicate the rather linear assembly that the factory employed.Yours will follow some of that-when your tub is done-you'll ease it down on the frame just like the boys n girls did at Ford.Nice detail work you've done.
As for the heat,it's been 90 F with high humidity for weeks here in Kentucky...the morning is about all a guy can do.Guess it beats -4F...

Thanks Ralph, glad you appreciate the work, I'm enjoying these bits as the whole thing starts to come together. I will be moving house shortly so the pressure is on to get all the main assemblies back into one piece so that I can easily move the jeep, at last the temperatures have cooled down a bit here though.

I have managed to obtain an important part for my jeep that I was looking out for, who would like to see some top quality NOS Porn?

The package says do not open but now its time to open!

Matt..when you put the other valve cover back on, rotate the PCV breather tube bracket so the brass outlet on it is at the 12 o'clock position!

Did the three keepers that hold each of the three main bearing shells stay in position during the rebuild?

Do you mean the studs that stop the shells spinning? if so then yes.

I finished the the rebuild of the transfer case today, hopefully it will not leak this time. Previously it was leaking through the bolts!

I bought some new special dowel bolts for the bell housing only to find that the jeep was fitted with original ford stamped dowel bolts so they went back on!

2 weeks ago the motor was fitted to the frame, that went as well as could be expected and the motor went in with minimal damage to the paint on the frame, I imagine that in the factory the frames would have taken a scuff here and there when the components were assembled so i'm not too fussed. Here are a couple of the photos of the flywheel and clutch fitting, went well using a scrap input shaft to align the clutch. The one ton crane is a useful bit of kit!

Last week the head was fitted up with a felpro gasket and torqued up, I then filled the block with water to make sure that there weren't any seeps, none so far

Over the last couple of days I have been fitting small components to the engine and also flushing the block and head with citric acid. I fitted the old water pump and sealed the system, then filled with water and 1/2kg of citric acid powder. I left the block for 24 hours and then emptied and flushed the system the next day, the citric acid is certainly strong and good stuff for de-cruding and de-rusting the inside of a block! I wanted to fit a rebuilt GPW water pump but I have not been able to locate a body to rebuild and I dont want to take apart another original pump again as the guys destroyed the last one I found so it looks like I'll have to fit a repro water pump, not something I really want to do but there you go.

I still have to reassemble the oil pump before I can fill the engine with oil but I need a press for that to fit the gear on to the shaft, will try and do that over the next couple of days. Who knows I may be able to try and start the engine over the next few weeks..... maybe, still need to sort out ignition wires and a few other bits

The photos below were taken after giving the frame another kerosene wash to remove oily hand prints, only had to wash the front half!

She's coming along, I'm not totally happy with some bits but there you go. I would like to fit original hose clamps but it would cost £100 to do that so I can't really justify it when i've got the repros to hand.
I plan to prime the oil system tomorrow!

Hi Guys,

I primed the oil system by unhooking the oil filter inlet line and squirting oil down the line until it came out of the oil pressure gauge line, this meant that the oil pump and oil galleries were all primed with oil. I then hooked up the oil gauge temporarily and span the engine over by using the starting handle with the plugs out, you can see the results in the video below! Nearly 20 psi at 150 rpm by hand with a multi weight oil is not bad! The engine turns over beautifully by hand with the plugs out but with the plugs in there is some serious compression!

Apologies for the rubbish video but it gives you an idea!
