Re: MB 409356 - photos added 03 Mar 1017
It has been quite a while since I provided an update.
I got the engine back and had an issue with the oil pressure but figured out what was going on and was able to get it fixed. The engine runs kind of rough but will figure out that issue in the future. I don't have the axles installed so I am able to run the gears a bit to exercise them.
I picked a few parts up at the MVPA Convention and had a great time. I got the glass from Marc and it looks great. the windshield frame is pretty beat up and that may take some time to get it repaired.
I was going to try and salvage the back panel but it was just too far gone and decided to get a replacement panel. i hope to get it installed tomorrow and start installing some of the smaller parts sitting in my back room. It is getting a lot heavier when I have to push it in and out of the garage which is probably a good thing.
The last couple of photos are test fitting the fenders. They were pretty beat up and I questioned my sanity many times while repairing them.

Hello Onaway,
Your jeep looks GREAT !!
What a trek of progress you have been doing, and accomplishing !!
One recommendation for all jeep restorers ....... bump using "bondo" !!
Instead use a product called "All-Metal" .
I get it at Carquest, with a tube of hardener.
It is silver in color, and is many light years better than bondo.
It is harder, doesn't ever shrink, or swell with moisture, or crack, or flake off after being exposed to the elements.
It sands smooth, and covers all weld lines on patched panels after you grind them down, after welding has been completed.
It applies the same as bondo, just make small amounts at a time, as it does harden up fairly quickly.
I highly recommend this product, and never use bondo, on anything, especially since this product is available.
I apply it, and feather it on with a single razor blade, as you can get a nice smooth application that way when doing your finish work on metal repairs.
You will always be happy with it on a permanent quality basis. You will never know it is there either !!!
Keep up your excellent work !!
Best Regards.
Ray

Thanks Ray, I will look into that. I used Lab Metal in some areas but I will investigate All Metal.
I found this last night when i was trying to fit the panel on the back.
Does anyone see anything incorrect in the photo?

Sorry its a bit late in the day, or year, I don't visit this board as much as I should
Yes, those light brackets are in the wrong rotation They are for the early jeeps, they where changed because it was a trap for mud etc. I hope that someone else has told you, and you managed to fix them?
Thanks for your thread, just read through it all.

I am getting closer to rolling it out. I need to update my photos over the last 8 months. I spent a month on the inner windshield frame.
I think it took a hit on the passenger side at some point.

Thank you Ray. I think I used 9 8.5" X 11" pieces of paper to make the star. The circle was pretty easy.
I'll try and get some outside photos if I can get my yard work done.

Here are a few more photos of my project. I spent about a month on the inner windshield repair but I am pretty happy with it. I ended up milling out the lower channel and dropping in 3/8 square tubing that I milled out to 5/16" ID. I also tack welded in some strips of metal where the rubber gasket channel was rusted through.
I went to try and start it today and of course the battery was to low to crank over!

I also built a frame around the old windshield so when I rebuilt it I would know it was the same as the original. You can see by the first photo what a mess the lower and part of the outer side channels were.

Hello,
That looks great !!
Very nice repair of that rusted windshield, nice save !
Your star work looks very nice as well, your entire jeep looks Great
You have come such a long way, and now you have a restored Jeep, a rolling part of American History, that you have saved
for future generations !!!!
Outstanding work, and we all know, hard work, but you certainly have it almost wrapped up !!!!
Your bumper markings came out beautiful as well !!!
Thanks for the update !

It has been a while since I have posted but I have finally finished putting it all together minus messing with the rear seat cushions and a brake leak.
My Dad lives in an assisted living facility and I took the Jeep up there today to give him a ride. He turns 98 in a few weeks and I marked up the Jeep in his WW2 Army Division numbers.
Now to find a trailer....

Have you tried to fit a top on the jeep yet? I say that because from the angle in your pics of that beautiful restoration, it appears to be bent BACK somewhat.
Good for you in getting your Dad out for a ride. I have taken my GPW over to the assisted living facility where my Mom was and parked it in front at the request of the staffers. They brought out about 15 or so residents, some in wheelchairs or using walkers to check it out. It was an instant hit as it brought back some great memories and stories from some of them. Some were able to get into the pass seat and tell me about where they were in WWII and if they were Rosies or in the Navy or Army.
Staffers said later that it brought a couple of them out of their "shell" and put some smiling faces on all of them. One staffer took a slew of pics and made a nice looping video that played on several screens in the lobby and where they went into the dining room.
I heard from a gal there who served in the USMC, another gent was in the South Pacific island hopping with the Army with MacArthur's forces. Another gent was in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific. Other women were building aircraft in southern CA or elsewhere.
It was therapeutic according to the lady in charge of the residents health....I strongly urge some of you who can, to see if a facility near you would be interested in a jeep or two visiting their residents.

Hi Chuck,
I like the idea of the nursing home. I have one very close to me. I will contact them to see if they want me to bring it by.
I have fitted fitted the top and prior to bending the arms it was sagging into my head. I used the 65.5" number and your 32 1/8" from top of frame to CL of the mount hole when I bent the arms. It is now sitting about a 1/4" forward so closer to 65.75" I don't know how it will fit once it gets wet and shrinks but it may have to be bent again. I had to trim off some of the cowl seal to get it to latch correctly. I also wanted to get up to give him a ride so I went with what I had vs. taking it apart. It is on my to do list at some point if needed.
Regards,
Tim

Re: MB 409356 - photos added 07 November 2019
I have another chapter to add to my Jeep experience. I gave my Dad a ride back in early June about 2 weeks before his 98th birthday and he had a great time. Sadly he passed away in early August at 98. He was in pretty good shape up until his last couple of weeks.
The first photo is of my 5 brothers and I carrying his casket to the grave site. What a great honor it was to be able to do that. During the presentation of the flag the Army Major called all 7 of us kids up and one by one grabbed our right hand and placed it on the flag placing his hand on top of our before presenting it to us. It still sends chills through me when I remember that event and words.
Our family was so blessed to have him for many years (56 for me) as that is a lifetime for many people. I miss him and hearing his stories of the depression, WW2, and many of the other experiences he had throughout his life but what a great run it was.
Thank you again to the many people on this site who helped make the memory of our Jeep ride a reality. I will have and cherish it for the rest of my life.
