Picked up my Gpw engine from the Drentse Motorenrevisie in Hoogeveen where it has been stitched en put in two valve sleeves. Nice work

And brought it to the shop Jan Wieringa who detected the cracks but couldnt repair that

Couldn't wait and strait out of work i put the regulator covers on the radiator ready to get warm including the wrinkle paint. But before that i applied aluminum tape to cover the autolite tag.

Heating

Beware and use a breating air filter against toxic fumes

Image

Apply three coates: 1 horizontally 2 vertically 3 diagonally.
Wait a minimum of 5 minutes between Every coat and apply it thick As it almost drips. And it shows like this

Image

And after one hour with the 500 watt light the cracks reveal!!!

Image

Just to be sure i wil leave it an additional hour under the warm light.

Just checked after 1:45 hours and they are hand dry. Pealed of the masking aluminium tape and voila!

Nice job showing your regulator cover paint! I contemplated buying that same brand of paint but ended up getting something different that didn't turn out near as well...after seeing this, I'm tempted to repaint mine using the same one you did!

I think the trick lies in the pre heating and heating during painting. As the cover on the aerosol says u have to apply a really thick coat an heat the object because heat is what cause the wrinkle effect! good luck and i hope my info helps

Auto lite tag needs some red paint

ImageImageImageImageImage

And the base needs wrinkle paint

ImageImage

Nice result, outside its 4 degrees Celsius so the light is important!

Nice work!

I did two Regs last weekend myself...I used the cheap stuff from Krylon and they came out like yours....

1) I set them in the sun for a half-hour on a 70+F day after blasting off the old paint and remnants of the original finish. That etches the surface which is suggested. Let the can sit in the sun also.
2) Taped off the tag like you did. (should have taped off the washer on the bottom but forgot) (Look for the build Mo/number & YR/letter when it has been blasted clean on the foot)
3) It says to apply a heavy coat of the stuff...well, don't do THAT but not a thin coat either!
4) Wait FIVE minutes and add another coat
5) Wait FIVE minutes and add a third coat
6) Let sit until sundown. Then sneak into the house for a couple days to "cure".

Oh yeah....if you put on too LITTLE it won't "wrinkle" evenly.
If you put on too much in each coat it sags and looks crappy.
If you think adding another coat after everything has dried would "improve" the look...fuggeddabboudditt...it will fill up the nice wrinkles and you have to start over again.

I tried one by shooting three coats and putting in the oven at 150F for 20 minutes....that was the time I put it on too THIN and I had to do it over again. The sun is plenty hot enough out of the wind on a clear day with air temps over 70F/24C.

One last thing....clean the interior out to remove any blast media before assembling as it is not good for the inner workings!

PS...the Krylon stuff is CHEAP so if you don't like the finished product, you probably have enough in the can to do five regulators or so.
