1944 Ford GPW-231738 - "Potshot"
Hallo!
After a year of searching around and shopping around, finally found my first WWII jeep, 700 miles away from home! Had it delivered yesterday in a record-breaking snowstorm, 45 cm! Needless to say, my arms are tired from shoveling snow all day!
First two pictures are from the seller, back in Nova Scotia, and the rest from me when I received it. Sorry for the iPhone-quality, only thing I had on hand.
Let me know what you think and if you see anything out of the ordinary!
I haven't uncovered the Hood numbers yet, but it appears to have a MB engine (hopefully WW2?) and a T90 tranny.
Engine was running 2 years ago and can still be turned by hand. The seller asked me if I wanted him to spot weld the cut-out "tailgate" for me, but welded it backward Won't be hard to fix! ^^ Thankfully, the front seem to be somewhat free of mods, but it gets "interesting" as we move toward the back! But I did get an extra rear-axle for free !
Cheers!
Etienne

Sure, found those 3 from the Seller, forgot to take new ones when I received it!
Am I reading the DoD tag correctly? 10-23-44? Make sense with the Serial number?

Hello and welcome to the crazy world of GPWs.
From my GPW studies and databases, you GPW 231738 should have come from the Dallas, Tx. assembly plant. I would estimate the hood number to be in the 205798xx or 205799xx range.

Wow, great to know! The Carb isn't in the photos but it's pretty clean, probably a post-war/civilian one, can't seem to find which one it is, but it's written Carter YS on it.
For the engine, would that be a CJ2A engine?

If the carb has YS stamped on the bowl cover, than it is for the CJV-35,M-38 jeeps. It is a water proof unit, highly sought after for the previously mentioned models.

Re: 1944 Ford GPW-231738
Well at least, the engine is WWII after all, thanks Tom!
For the carb, I took a few pictures, it has 6 patents on the side and it's written 1-507 on it. If someone has a correct one for a '44 GPW, it's up for trade
Would that be the waterproof unit? How can you tell? (Sorry for the newbie questions)
I should've explained my background better in the first post!
I've followed only one semester in aerotechnic conception, where I had the chance to touch basicly everything and master nothing But it's fun to get back in my books and re-learn everything. Quite a few differences but the basics are the same. Glad to finally be able to go hand's on instead of doing some Catia/Autocad!
I now work in the video game industry as a 3D artist where I worked on a WW2-Pacific mod for a few months but recently moved into a studio

That looks likes an original YS-637S to me.The diaphram chambers give it away.I am sure someone will trade you a WO type carb for the YS.Hopefully,it will be the WWII type your jeep came with but if not, postwar WO carbs will work just fine as long as the JEEP POLICE don't come down on you.LOL.

Haha! Great to know thanks! Bah I'll keep it as is for now, one part I won't have to restore... for now!
I'm trying to get it in running condition and rust-free, then I'll swap out the wrong parts

Nice find!! Congrats!!
Some interesting writing on the windshield, what can you make of it?
Its always fun to see what type of markings the jeep originally had.
Congrats again, looks like a keeper to me!!!

It looks like Tire Pressure 30 lbs to me but its already on the dash so it's weird to have it twice!
On the left of that it kinda looks like C47 something?
Hard to tell !
At least, there is just 3 layers of paint, blue, white and OD.

True, kinda looks like Day Tues! or C47 tues but I have no idea what that would mean
Started cleaning up the Air cleaner. Surprisingly, the inside filter and the cup were both clean, just washed off the oil and done! ^^
The exterior shouldn't be too hard to clean up either, just scrubbed a bit with some steel wool and it came right off.
For the rust, any chemical to recommend or just sanding/blasting it away?
Sorry for the blurry pictures, too much new year bubbles
Bottom cup is also stamped with an "H"
On a sidenote, found a storage locker that's big enough and 10min away for the winter, so I'll get better pictures soon, and start the hunt for some numbers/markings!

Etienne (don't know French so assume that is your name?),
I would sandblast the air cleaner. It is remarkable it is in such great shape, especially the bowl.
