Haven't posted in a while, working on the ACM1 tub now. A couple shots of the tinning on the tub before I had it sand blasted.

The three areas on the firewall, you can see where the tape was used to mask the paint -

And the two spots on the inside for the filterette, again you can see faintly where it was masked off -

And finally a clean tub to work with. Now to repair all the corrosion and Bubba's "improvements." Overall, the tub is pretty solid, especially the floors.

Paul,it sure could be worse...looks like the oblique hatties, steps, driver's side panel...watch the repro panels at the detent depths if you have to go that road.A solid floor is quite a time saver...you're on your way-

You got that right Ralph. A mix of fits on the repro panels, so everything needs some tweeks with the hammer and dolly, or make your own. I'm doing a little of both.

Time to take the bad channels and such off. Bubba did a lot of flux-core welding around the steps so need to cut a bunch of that out.

Replaced all the bad sheet metal on the LH around the tool indents. Common area of corrosion, wish there were more quality aftermarket alternatives by manufacturers in this area, but glad there are at least some alternatives, right? Not that long ago, the only choice was straight fabrication, at least we have some products to work with. Some outstanding, some not so much.

Nice. Did you do the blasting to clean the metal? What media was used?

Thanks sawbuck. I didn't do the blasting, I took the tub to a local blasting business, and they just used sand. I took my frame to them before, pretty reasonable price I thought and they turned it around quick.

Just a couple quick update photos. Took a bit of work to repair the tool indents area, combination of patch panels/small pieces of sheet metal, and a bunch of hammer and dolly. I used some "lab metal" and glazing putty to dress up the welds but tried to leave most of the panel as is, with a few bumps and waves.

The flange to the fender was pretty beat up, needed some repair (that 2"-3" section around the captive nut was gone)

Hi Paul,
Appearance is excellent on your DS-looks like a clean finish w nice deep pioneer detents ..that sure is a busy area to hump through, and naturally the one which first rots...good progress & good update.

Nice work. Looks great. I really like that Lab Metal as well. It really comes in handy for small repairs.

Thanks guys!

Between the axe indent and getting everything to line up with the new hat channel inside, this area was challenging for my limited sheet metal skills. I will add that the new gas tank well I installed from Joe's Motor Pool (originally picked it up from chasendeer, Ron carries these now) is a really nice piece. It fit perfect.

Here's a photo of the gas tank well installed, still need to do some more clean up work on the hats

Image

The right side has some small pockets of rust and a lot of buggered up weld in an around the step, just like the driver's side. Looks worse in person than in the picture, especially from the area under the step.

Mocking up the repro step

Out with the bad metal. Bubba had just filled all of this area with weld, and it was a bit of a mess. Nothing a right angle grinder can't clean up. :)

Certainly a lot better than rusted out, so I can't complain too much, again this tub is overall in really good shape.

Image

I welded in some new steel around the support holes and where the front and rear side pieces join. Still need to use the die grinder and clean up the edge of the holes.

Image

Time to replace the floor piece. Just used a piece of stiff paper to make a template and then cut it out in steel. I saved the drain area from the old floor so just had to mark the proper place. Bubba piled on the weld into the curve of the floor so I had to recreate it in this piece. The step is just clamped in to check the fit.

Image

Welded in the floor piece and started grinding the welds off, with the drain added back in.

Repaired the RH side Y gusset/brace. I didn't want to replace the whole piece since the factory welds showed so nice at the top, so just added a few inches of new steel at the bottom.

Image

Tacked in the new step...

Image

Welded in. Now just need to grind it smooth. The area behind where the body pieces join was really bowed out, so I took a torch, hammer, and dolly and tried to get it flat again. It's pretty close, but still could use a little more work.

Paul that's a fine big flange on that step-the MDJ step had no such configuration...it turned downward and would have been quite a non-factory hookup- had we used it-Who was the vendor?
Nice metal work altogether, especially for the first time out.I see you now belong to the spotweld removers club too
Won't be long before you're stirring & straining for her primer.
Lot of 43s coming out of the barns isn't there?
Btw, should I assume the two-piece skid plate I missed out on got a good home?

Ralph, Classic Enterprises made that step, produced here in the U.S. It's a well made piece, though I think the steps produced by Midwest Military are even better as I used one on the LH and it was really nice (though don't believe MM makes the MB style any more). Wonder if Joe's Motor Pool will make these MB ones some day (and distribute through Ron)?

That two piece skid plate did find a good home! I already had the original big piece, and had a repro for the small one. This one needs some work, but I'll post a side by side photos with the repro some time to compare.

Hoping to get that RH done this weekend so I can move on a couple other spots on the tub. Can't wait to get some paint on this girl! :)
