Hey John
Great looking project. Possibly a crated one, Did they handle both ford and willys at rockhampton and Birdsville? Unusual location for the ratio tag. Nice to see anyway. Hope to hear it running when im out in july :)

Not a lot of progress of late, however I did get to spend some time in the garage today.

Managed to lift off the old tub, and it is sad....
Transmission case date code.jpg
Transmission case date code.jpg (42.92 KiB) Viewed 1955 times
Transmission Date code of Feb 26, 1944.

Though I have spent some time trying to work out the Chassis number and estimate the USA Rego number.

Here goes...

The Engine number is 371922, the Tub is ACM2 and is 23298. The last two digits on the chassis were XXXX82. I am also guessing the DOD as March 3, 1944.

WIth some help of the internet, I found engine numbers of 372181 and 372792. in both cases the Chassis numbers were about 61500~ lower than the Engine.

Playing with Excel, I worked out a formula to calculate the Chassis number where the gap was between 61640 and 62600. Knowing the last two digits (82) I have calculated that the Chassis should be 310282.

With Robert's help (of Data Plates fame) I have calculated the USA Rego # as 20488278

The motor is out and finally cleaned up. It is amazing where the mud had managed to hide.

Now it is time to start the strip down of the block and send out for refurbishment and machining. Last time it was done was 1956.

A long time between tasks.....

Rear axle strip down.

here is the rear axle on its trolley frame. I have made these for both the front and rear axles, and they certainly make it a lot easier to move them around the garage.

No need to purchase the Hub socket when you can just use a cold chisel or a large screwdriver to remove the wheel hub nut. (no I did not do this!!)

Image

Might as well do it correctly, and use a GP17033 NOS socket for the task. Ford on Willys? is that allowed???

C'mon mate, get your act together and come a few weeks earlier so you can get to Corowa!!!! Still time to make it for the swap on saturday if you jumped on a flight tonight!!!

Good work John, glad to see you got some time on this jeep!

I wonder how that ring gear would clean up with a light bead blast of walnut or in a chemical bath like some of the very 'neutral' solutions floating about now like the 'Rusted Solutions' stuff of the Metal Rescue stuff (very good stuff, i`ve used it on gears, come up a treat!- available from Repco on special too until the 19th march).

Cheers,
Ian.

He :) y Ian
Maybe when I retire I can get to the Corowa show. Suppose I will have to ship the jeep out as well. Not the same being at a show without your vehicle :) Coming over for my Daughter and Grandaughte'rs birthday party's.

Hello John,

that will need to be cleaned up before an analysis can be done on wear. Nick how long are you out for? It would be good to catch up, are you up for another session at the Bridge Hotel?
Sorry guys I won't be at Corowa this year, tight timelines and lots of work to do.(Not jeep unfortunately)
cheers
Bill.
