Something to check on the front axel is the bellcrank construction. I'm not sure when they changed, but only on my VEP GPW have I seen a bellcranck that doesn't have a web to reinforce the two arms where they meet the hub portion.
I read about this change somewhere. A safety issue apparently. Mine has been brazed at this point since it cracked. Probably not going to go back on it once restored.

What's broken now?

Re: GPW 2956
What about the rear cross member on the frame? Would it be the Willys type or have the tooling holes. When I removed my grab handles I noticed they all had smooth heads. Except for the top bow brackets which had f on heads

Re: GPW 2956
GPW 2956 is a Louisville jeep and it also had all smooth head bolts holding the grab handles on.

I have GPW 2996 with Identical battery tray. Mine was made in ChesterRonnie Guin wrote: ↑Thu Mar 29, 2007 5:16 pmWilliam, as far as I can tell the battery tray is the original one. There is no indications of any of the brackets or rivets being molested or tampered with. I know the slat grill battery tray is a little different, but why would the Army change out the battery tray on a four year old jeep? Remember the guy I got the jeep from bought it in November of 1946 from the Army. He said he never changed out the battery tray. The frame has none of the usual corrosion or rust under the battery tray either.
