Additional data for GPW 12102 which was canbalized for parts many years ago. The hood number was 2066889. It was eventually used on a Sept. 42 GPW which was sold a long time ago. Best wishes; Leo

Hi,
Only signed up to this forum recently and really got into the VEP GPW stuff as I have had my GPW for almost 40 years , serial No. 284, Del. Date 2/26/42 on original brass data plates and chassis no. GPW13313 stamped in usual place on chassis . This Jeep ended its military career as a driving instruction vehicle in the British Army ( Woman's Royal Army Corps) and has a REME rebuild plate dated June 1956. When I got it around 75/76 it still had the script back panel( pretty rusted out) but had been retro fitted with jerrycan holder and spare wheel bottom support among other later fittings but most parts are original F marked but of course could have come from other Jeeps during the rebuild process. The block casting is numbered M46558 which I am told is a post-war block and this may be borne out by the fact it has a postwar type crankshaft but still on chain drive to camshaft. The Jeep has been rebuilt a couple of times in my ownership, the last about 12 years ago. Would be interested to know if possible from all you experts out there which plant it may have come from and are the non matching serial and chassis numbers a discrepancy indicating that 2 early GPW's were used in the 56 rebuild ?.
Best regards Gerry McGonigal.

Hi Gerry,
Photos of the serial number data plate and the complete frame serial number stamping will be needed to answer most of your question. Data plate 284 and frame 13313 have most likely came together during a rebuild at some point in the past. They were not together when they left Ford in 1942.

Hi Tom,
Many thanks for your reply that confirms my suspicions. I should have said also that the chassis is Willys style and all these years ago I assumed it was a rebuild combination, but way back in the 80's I had a visit from Andy Beck ( now passed away sadly) from Colorado who pointed out to me where the chassis number would be and surprisingly to me anyway it turned out to be a Ford stamping. When rebuilding and stripping the body no hood numbers or American markings were found, only British markings and plenty of lead filler! I assume from the '56 rebuild. I will get some photos of the data plates and chassis stamping posted when I work out the process for doing so. Some of my stuff has a bad habit of disappearing into the ether!.
Cheers, Gerry.

Interesting that GPW 284 has the same DoD as my GPW 2647...2363 digits apart. Goes to show that serial numbers were really out of skew on these early GPW's!

Hello all, I'm new to Jeeps and New to the Forum. I've just bought a VEP GPW but can't be 100% on the serial number. It looks like 6008 in the photo and was sold as such but the 6 looks wrong for a 6 and could be a '1'. Is there an expert who has seen these numbers and maybe show me an example of a 6 or a 1 in the serial number? Unfortunately, the data plate is long gone and some one has removed the hood numbers. There were only 2 coats of green paint and I found the stars on the hood and sides and the trace of a single blue number on one side of the hood. A real shame!
Here are some photos, the bumperets are upside down but have markings (No idea what they are or mean). Can anyone confirm if the steering box is correct, looks to have been there for a while but as the steering wheel is CJ I suspect its a replacement. Also, the horn. is it correct? Any info on assembly plant DOD estimate etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everybody,
A friend of mine bought a gpw project with framenumber gpw 55238, fairly complete only did the previous owner buy a "new" willys style chassis. With the round tube in front. Is it possible that this framenumber still had a willys style chassis and not the u shaped crossmember chassis like later GPW's did?
Best regards from Belgium
Ben

Not likely, as that number would put it in the June or July of 1942 time period and they should have used them all up before then. Is it a script GPW? Possible the result of going through a re-build program?
