10448, DOD 3/25/42 Russ Rice.Has a 442 block. I know the owners back to the late 50's but nothing of its military service. Years ago I saw for sale in Supply Line GPW 10447. Never did follow up. Wonder what happened to it.

Dear All,
I'd just like to say hello to all my fellow VEP owners. I'm new to the forum and new to Jeep ownership, although I've always had old cars - Austins, Triumphs and a Triumph TR3 mostly. Now I've taken the plunge - big time - and have bought a GPW in need of complete restoration. This is a long haul job, on a time and funds permitting basis, but I'm loving what I'm finding out already...
So here's the gen:
Serial No: GPW7258
Date of Delivery: 03-20-42
Engine number: CJ-2A39598
It's script bodied, with glove-box numbers that match the GPW stamp on the Willys frame. It has a Willys engine which, although it's stamped as a CJ, is of the wartime type i.e. chain driven timing gear. All I know of the vehicle's history, is that it was recently imported to the UK from the US. And it has traces of yellow and black striped paint (amongst some blue and various shades of green) which make me think it may have lived on an airfield for some time. I don't think I'm going to find a hood number, as there's little paint remaining under which to search. But that's it for now - I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions in the months and years to come - what an amazing resource these forums are!
Best Regards
David

Welcome!
You've come to the right place. To help us help you, you'll need to learn how to post pictures, & then you'll be off to a great start on a great restoration!

Hi David,
Let me welcome you to the Gee You have a very nice vechicle early vep GPW. It is a shame about the engine, but there is an early one for sale on the for sale section
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=221199" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This would be very close, but no cigar as they say.

Dave, don't be frightened to ask any question at all, no matter how daft you think it is, we all have been there. Looking forward to your progress. I guess that live in Surrey and in the Film industry by your username.
Regards,
Dave

Thanks for the welcome JAB and Dave,
Yes, had a bit of trouble trying to upload pics - I'll try and crack it and get some stills up for you to see. And yes, slightly transparent user name...
I'm sure I'll have plenty of obvious questions to fire at you all - but as I said, having browsed the forums, it really is an amazing resource.
Re the engine, I have been offered an engine block swap by a friend of mine. He has a GPW block and is happy to take my Willys block in return. Any drawbacks that you can think of (assuming that his isn't cracked)?
Best
David

Check the bores, as it could need boring or sleeving, and check for cracks. I would also only trade only the parts you get. In other words, don't trade a complete motor for a bare block. Also, if you are swapping for a bare block or less than a complete engine, it's very important to get the main bearing caps.Re the engine, I have been offered an engine block swap by a friend of mine.
