VEP Hood number

Post by Youngback » Thu Jan 25, 2018 9:52 am

Hi all. New poster. I currently have GPW#11459 DoD 3-30-42. Ive been browsing through the forums and have seen earlier s/n GPW's and earlier DoD with later hood numbers and I'm curious if mine is correct. I have 2058231. It spent most of its early life building the Alaska highway.

Thanks to everyone for the great info on this board

Hi,
Ford was assembling GPWs in 5 different plants, and the serial number was "given" by the engine serial, which was stamped, I believe, in only one engine assembly plant, before the engine got on a Jeep assembly line.
The hood number was assigned after assembly and final inspection, in no particular order other than the way the Jeeps were lines up after inspection.
If you account for delivery times, different storage times, etc; you can easily understand why serials, dates of delivery and hood numbers are not linear on GPWs

Thanks for the reply. I understand the serializing of vehicles. What was confusing to me was people had previously asked for their hood numbers after giving the s/n’s and DoD (very close to the s/n and DOD of my particular Jeep) and they were being told the hood number was within a specific range of about 75 numbers almost 1000 numbers after what I knew mine to be. I had been wondering if my information was incorrect and it’s had the wrong hood number for the last 14 years. Weaselers Jeep is the first ive seen that gives me confidence in my info again. It’s just a number in the end but I think we are all striving for authenticity here.

The one bit of info I don’t know is which plant my Jeep came from and where the original engine is. It had the original engine up until 1969. No idea where it has gone since then

Thanks again

If it's of any help, mine is GPW3606, from River Rouge plant, dod 3-3-42, hood number 2055994, all these being originals and not estimations.

I think you might try to contact Tom by PM here on the G503 board, or on Facebook.
He has put together an impressive amount of data and researches; and is certainly the man that can give you the most correct answers. Consider donating to his research fund also; data and history are immaterial but of the greatest importance ;)

Absolutely I’d donate to that. History is rarely appreciated by those who are creating it.

I guess the comparison between Leo and my GPW highlights Fab's point above; GPW 11730, USA 2067040. unknown DOD, Dallas plant.

Cheers,
Ian.
