Paint Can Lid Amp Gauge Stewart Warner
I recently picked up this gauge, not correct for my GPW but wondered if it was correct for a VEP GPW. The Stewart Warner number on the bottom of the face is 403398. Thanks for any replies in advance.

Yes this would be correct for a VEP GPW. PM sent.

I think the correct VEP Gauge had a small letter F at the bottom under the word Ampere, with no other writing.
If you wanted to sell it I would be interested in it for my VEP.

Re: Paint Can Lid Amp Gauge Stewart Warner
While the "SW" marked AMPERE gauge face part number for the 50-25-0-25-50 is "403398", that is generally accepted to be the style found on later GPWs with the standard bezel/case assembly and the plainer "F" marked face is for "early" GPWs.
I am a little surprised that a paint can style 50-25-0-25-50 long needle AMPERE has surfaced with the "SW" marked face on it.
I have heard that the "F" style were not made by Stewart-Warner, but by Ford before but have seen nothing to support that. This paint can style AMPERE with the "Late" stye face is a curveball here...are we to believe that Ford obtained the "SW" marked AMPERE gauges from Stewart Warner and produced their own "F" style at the same time or what? I do believe that SW produced the "short needle" style AMPERE gauges for big trucks with a different face at the same time but they were the 30-0-30 style even though they were the paint can style.
This gauge you have only makes this more confusing as far as I can see...the paint can AMPERE I have is an "F" style face and several pics I have are the same. I just have not seen a paint can AMPERE with the "SW" marking (and part number) on it before.
Hmm...anyone else have an opinion on the AMPERE gauge face markings for the paint can bezel/cases in the 50-25-0-25-50 stye?

I’ve been looking for one for a while for GPW-2647. Close anyway. Is it for sale? Sending a PM.

Re: Paint Can Lid Amp Gauge Stewart Warner
Just found this on Peter Elliott's Speedometer and Gauges page on Jeepdraw.com
Ford "Paint can lid" style
These were used in very early GPW’s. The faces are identical to the later style with the exception of the Amp gauge which has Stewart Warner made in USA printed around the bottom of the face unlike the later Amp gauge which just had a block F. Evidence I have found seems to show these were only used in the early GPW’s with the MB type chassis.

Re: Paint Can Lid Amp Gauge Stewart Warner
"Sean Elliot", not Peter...
I think the general consensus is that we should NOT attempt to use the "MB type" chassis to date the use of the paint can lid SWs in GPWs....I think that style of gauge was probably used on first contract GPWs while the first contract GPWs did not ALL have an "MB style" frame.
My $0.02 worth...
However, as you noted....the paint can AMPERES SW should have been a long needle with and "F" on it, not the SW info on the bottom of the face. I think this is perhaps a gauge used on a different vehicle. If I was restoring a VEP GPW, I'd go with the "F" style AMPERES myself.
