I just happen to have just started on my gauges. See pic below. Feb 1942 GPW paint can lid style.
all paintcans except the bottom right. And the um..."patina" pretty much matches. This is where more expertise is needed. Was there ever a "mixed set" installed, or is that one just a WWII era replacement....
That one was replaced. I have a paint can lid to replace it. I was able to trade a junk 1996 ford for it....
well, I'll need a check...call it $2k.. You can mail it.

The non-paintcan style gauge in that dash photo is the TEMP gauge...which as we all know and some have experienced...can break where it enters the block when an engine removal is being done....that would seem to be the more likely scenario as to why it is not a paintcan style gauge!

Did anyone ever venture a guess or discover when the paintcan style SWs were no longer used and the standard bezels/cases were used in the GPW?

I would guess March. These gauges do not seem as well thought out as the newer version. To me it seems likely that water can get into these easier.

Paintcans were gone by early April in Dallas.

Does the 30 amp fit for a 1/4 Ton? I thought it should be 50amp.

Hi
The paint can lid 30 amp gauge was only for diamond T trucks and federal wreckers trucks only.
The slat jeep and early half ton dodge are Autolite 30 amp gauge.
Early GPW had only 50 amp not 30 amp according to my gauge books
The later dodge had 60 amp not 50 amp

Thanks

Cheers Peter

This information might help a bit: http://jeepdraw.com/correctgauges.html

There is an older topic on this site in which someone stated he had an original 30/30 amp meter on a January 19 '42 slat, So the change to the 50/50 amp meter may have been as late as the third week of January 1942.

The Stewart Warner -30/+30 "paint can lid" amp gauge was not used on either early MB's or early GPW's.

The Autolite -30/+30 amp gauge was used on early MB's.

According to all presently available information and research, the Stewart Warner -50/+50 "paint can lid" amp gauge was used on VEP GPW's.

Both the Dodge WC-53 Carryall and WC-57 Command Car, cited by the eBay seller as vehicles which used his 30-0-30 ammeter, had 12 volt electrical systems with a 55 ampere generators. Neither Dodge ever used a 30-0-30 ammeter. When was crack legalized in Georgia? :D

Fred, people will say anything to make a sale. I'm sure he's hoping a desperate restorer will buy it thinking its correct for their early GPW or MB...looks like one bid for $100 so far. If it were cheap I'd buy it for the housing and lid.
