Bumperettes and front X member questions.

Post by m3bobby » Tue Jun 20, 2017 1:48 pm

I have a few questions which I hope should be answered easily.

1st, should a VEP GPW have F marked bumperettes? My VEP had one F script and the other had no markings. I'd assumed that as it has a Midland frame they were both unmarked so imagine my surprise to have one of each.

2nd, the front round section cross member has what appear to be 2 stubs from possible earthing studs or for something to fasten to. Both are on the back of the member, one is in the centre and other is to one side. Could someone enlighten me as to what they are and possibly direct me to our hosts listing if he has them. If not would anyone have rough dims so I can machine some up.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks gents, would you happen to know what thread/size they would be so I can make some on the lathe.

Cheers.

A picture is worth a thousand words but since I don't have one in front of me:

I'll have to double check the size (I think 5/16"). They are a bolt with a circular flat head, approximately 1/8" tall. They are tacked in three places between the head and the cross member; as if there were three small holes drilled around the primary hole in the cross member to tack the bolt. I took one apart but I'll have to find it.

I'll try and get some diameters, thread type, length, and some other dimensions. I'll try to locate a pic or two.

I think 5/16" also. The nuts are sort of obscure in Section 2603 of one of the SNL's.

I believe your GPW 6008 should have Ford rear bumpetetts.

I just purchased a small handful of those studs at the Convention, so at least one vendor stocks them.

Thanks gents, I could probably make those except for the dimples, if anyone remembers the vendor on knows of a vendor please let me know.

R.E. the bumperettes, would the midland frame be supplied to ford minus them? I beleive they had Midland/Willis style front bumpers so assumed the same for the rear?

Just google "Weld Stud" and you will find them. Or here is a link.

Hi all.

As much as I like Paolo's stuff, I have a couple of these studs, and I am sure that they aren't the correct length. I will check tomorrow. I have a question, how do they work?

I believe that Midland did not put on bumperettes on the frames sent to Ford. It would be up to Ford to do that and finding "F"s on them would indicate Ford installed the bumperettes in my estimation. Shipping/stacking frames with them installed would not make the job any easier and lead to damage in my opinion.

On the other hand, the thread about the nuts/bolts orientation for the axle bumpers on the frame being different between a Ford and Midland frame may be because Midland DID install them. The way to tell would be to see if the bolts are "F" marked...if they are then Ford put 'em on, if they aren't then Midland put 'em on. It would be wise to also check MB frames from VEP MBs to see if their axle bumpers are nuts up or nuts down...and if they are marked on the bolts!

However....aside from the holes in the frame horn for the MB frame tag...what is the difference between the Midland frames and the GPW frames during the time frame in which Ford used the Midland frames anyway? I don't know myself...
