GPW 6173 questions

Post by cdn2a » Mon Apr 24, 2017 1:38 pm

Ok, I just purchased this GPW, and would like to know more about it.

It's a script tub, looks like a Willys frame. My question is, based on the stamping what plant was it built at?

I dont have the data plates for it. How should they be stamped to be accurate?

I do not know how to decipher numbers as what plant they were built at. How ever I have read here on the G that GPW numbers that are stamped on the motor mount plate like yours were made at the Louisville Ky. plant. All other plants stamped their serial numbers on the frame just in front of the motor mount plate.

Your Number stamping looks to be in the style of font that Ford used and in my opinion is original to the GPW.

Ford was using the Willys style frame in the era that your GPW was built based on the serial number.

Look at the posting below by Tom.

Hi Mike,

The last two photos you show have the frame serial number stamping on the left motor mount bracket not on the frame rail. As far as I have found only Louisville stamped the motor mount bracket rather than the frame rail.

Thanks for the info! Thats what I was looking for!

It's far from a numbers matching jeep, (mb engine etc) however I'd like to keep things as original as possible.
