Hi 2/14Marine,

Thanks for the post !

GPW 297 should have been ( as was yours also ) from the 9th day of GPW production at the Dallas, Tx. assembly plant and less than the 150th unit made there.

I'm out of town today but going to try and take a look at it tomorrow and get some pictures. Mine was taken apart when I bought it. I'm hoping this will help with my restoration.

Are you looking to purchase it? Looks like a nice VEP GPW.

Same DoD as my GPW# 2647. This illustrates the wide serial number spread to DoD in regards to VEP GPW's.

....and the Sixty-Four Thousand Dollar Question is:

What is the frame number?

I agree. From the photos, I can't see the Ford Script on the rear panel.

I talked with the seller of this GPW. It is a Script body. The frame has a Willys Overland plate and number on the front frame horn. So its a GPW body on a W/O frame. The engine is a post war willys based on the info from the seller.

Might have a CJ2A frame. Can see a PTO hole in the rear cross member and can barely make out the slot for the rear license plate. Front bumper also appears to be a CJ.

I had the chance to look at this jeep this morning. It has a rebuilt post war engine. Runs well, brakes will need some work. Has pancake airfilter. F script front seats. Early thin transfer case shifters. Green Sheller steering wheel. Brass data plates. Has early features. Windshield does not have the supports for the rifle rack. Missing rear body support sections. Body does have some bonds. Fuel sump looks solid. Has the early axles. Axle shafts are not scalloped. One is F marked.

Now the $64,000 question. Does the frame match the data plate number. Drum roll please.
No. Stingray is right. It's a CJ2a frame. It's serial # 12354. The rear shock mounts were moved. It does have the machine gun mount on the frame. The frame is very solid with original gussets.

I was never interested in buying it. I just wanted to see it since my gpw was produced on the same day. I think it's very interesting that these jeeps were made in Dallas and stayed or made it back to the same area. I hated to see that the frame had been swapped.

The owner told me he's he will come down. Said he'd take $7500. He said someone from Florida offered him $6500. I think he's reluctant about someone not looking at it before they buy it, He said he paid $5000 before having the engine rebuilt. I'm not sure it's worth the $5000 he paid for it. If you're interested in it please feel free to ask any questions. The owner doesn't know anything about these jeeps. I will post some pictures I took later today.

Having the original frame swapped for a CJ frame is very unfortunate. I was hoping the frame would have been found to be legitimate. Along with the post war block this is a true jeep salad.

Unfortunate indeed.
