Rear reflector angle?

Post by Wessels » Thu Feb 18, 2016 8:25 am

Hello...

I have obtained Stimsonite reflectors for my GPW 30988. A question arrises regarding the rear reflectors since tye mounting holes are angled. Does anyone know if the rear reflectors should be oriented at (\/) in side the bezels (which themselves are mounted at (\/) or should they be (I I). If the latter, then the reflectors would be mounted at the 12 and 6 position in the bezel (aligned with the mounting holes.) If the former...then 2 and 8. My GPW was produced at the Richmond, California plant in June 1942. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Hi Wessels,

While GPW reflector angles is an item that I track, period photos of the rear showing the reflectors in detail are rare. Also original condition surviver GPW data is almost as hard to come by.

This photo shows a reflector from GPW 41846. It has been moved down to install the trailer socket. If it was not messed with the reflector center line would have had a flat ( 9:00 to 3:00 ) angle in it's original postion . With another closer look, the center line in the photo is with the screw holes so the reflector would be angled in toward the upper center of the GPW in the time period of your GPW.

In Nabholtz revised on page 46 there is an early Sept. 42 GPW with the reflector center line in line with the screw holes. Added Note - In late Summer 42 after the rear reflectors were mounted in the lower positions the angle of the reflector center line changed to being tipped out at the top.

Sorry, I don't have more 42 reflector angle data points at this time.

Edited to change red content to green content.

I had the same question for GPW-17963 April 24, 1942......how to orientate the verticle seam in a Stimsonite No. 12 reflector insert. After consulting Nabholtz (see below) I assembled them so the seam would be verticle on both sides and the rear reflectors. While this requires the two sides to be assembled the same way with screw holes and the seams at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions, the rears are mounted differently and would have the seam at the 1 & 7 position on one side and the 11 & 5 o'clock position on the other with regard to the bezel holes prior to installation.
