GPW oil pan bolts

Post by Richard Grace » Thu May 15, 2014 5:14 am

I don't believe that I have seen this subject discussed before. I have found GPW oil pan bolts, P/N 20326-S7, 5/16X18X5/8, with three different head markings. All are recessed head bolts. One has concentric rings with HTS in the center. One has concentric rings with a block letter E in the center. One has a block number 1 with no rings. Has anybody seen any other markings? I have found HTS and E markings mixed on the same engine. Any comments?

And the drawings for that Ford Part No. may indicate the manufacturer. SEMs would be a good candidate.

I took off my oil pan and ten of the bolts were "F" marked, non-recessed. The rest were "A" and "E" marked. None were recessed. Motor is GPW 13551. Is it possible the "F" bolts are factory? I don't know why recessed would be replaced by "F" marked considering the known history of this jeep.

I can see some rebuild depot throwing all the 5/16 X 5/8 bolts in the same bin and just grabbing the first 20 they put their hands on to install an oil pan......... -RG

Hi Richard,

I have no hard data (or that i remember!), but from talking to many 1st and early 2nd contract owners, it seems that these early GPW's used F marked bolts and the sems bolts with recessed head didnt appear until much later.

I know that doesnt answer your 3 different markings Q, but thought it worthy to add.

I have only seen the HTS marking on bolts here in Australia on GPW blocks. Granted, i havent seen alot of originals (maybe a dozen or so?), but have a few odd bolts turn up over the years in lots ive bought and they have only been the same marking as the others i have collected prior to them (which are the same as on the photo Chuck posted of GPW 229006's block)

Slightly off-topic and bumping an old thread:

I've found that the Pioneer brand # 859020 oil pan bolt set for the small block Mopar V8's is very close to correct for the GPW's Sems bolts and are very inexpensive as a 20 piece set from places like Summit Racing! They fit perfectly and have the correct style, 1/2" hex and thread length, but are unmarked in the center depression:

Currently under $7 a set!

Hope this helps someone!

The Pioneer bolts seem to better match the style of a couple originals I have as seen in one of the posts above.

I've also used Pioneer Chevy oil pan bolt sets to get 1/4"-20 Sems bolts (And a few 5/16" bolts) for use on the transmission and brake fluid access covers.

12078 has a complete set of F marked, non-recessed head bolts. So, yes, it's possible.

I wonder what bolts were used on the GP oil pans?
