Data plates on glove box door
We're all data plates on the outside of the door? Just bought my first one. Sn GPW 6265. Body and frame match, but the engine is GPW 2985 followed by a star. DoD 3/16/42. Plate looks to be in place with orig rivots but it faces into the box?? Also is the engine # supposed to match the sn. Thanks from e newbie. Brian G.

Re: Data plates on glove box door
Hello BriG,
When a GPW left the assembly plant the motor, frame, and serial number data plate all had the same number.
The data plates were originally riveted to the outside of the glove box door.
Now comes one of the reasons to have a GPW database and for persons to support one.
GPW motor number 2985 was originally in GPW 2985. A fellow G503 member posted about 1 1/2 years ago that he had GPW 2985. Many owners will be very $ happy to have the original motor back in their GPW. Unless this owner is the one that removed GPW motor 2985 and then parted out GPW 2985.
Posting photos should be the first task at hand when asking questions on a forum as what a current owner thinks or was told may have been a cover-up by some earlier owner.

Re: Data plates on glove box door
I found the registry page and see where Richard Gr has #2985. I spoke with the daughter of the orig. owner and she told me that the jeep was bought with that engine from the army in 46 or 47. The head had been replaced with a cj2 type in later years. Is it possible the army swapped this engine during the service period ?

I own GPW2956 with matching frame the DOD is 3-10-42. Only 29 numbers apart from yours! Mine has matching frame and tub, but motor is a much higher GPW number. I did recover the original hood number.

Re: Data plates on glove box door
Kinda a false alarm. Richard only was the data plates for GPW 2985 and not the whole the GPW as his post seemed to imply.
Still looking forward to seeing photos of your GPW.
