There is a discussion going on with them about having a display of VN period MVs on the pier next to the ship, and a discount ticket for the MV owner. Security would be provided to watch the vehicles during the 4 hour cruise. Not sure about this yet, or the inclusion of other eras of MVs which is what we are asking for. I will post updates here.

Always great to see this old gal get underway. She's much happier making a bow wave than rusting away pier side like so many others!

They are hoping to sail her to the 75th anniversary of the Normandy landings. At the 50th the O'Brien was the only large ship that was there in 1944 to return. The crew was mostly WWII vets. Think about it - a mothballed ship in Benicia waiting to go to the scrapper is saved by a guy, brought to San Francisco, they scrounged other Liberties at the mothball fleet, and she is approved by the Coast Guard for cruising with passengers. Probably no other ship in the U.S. will ever make that evolution. There are only two Liberty ships running in the world, and the other was heavily modified as a classroom ship. O'Brien is just as she was.

One of the excursions planned for the MVPA International Convention in Pleasanton, CA in August will be a bus trip to Fisherman's Wharf, with an option of touring the O'Brien and the USS Pampanito fleet submarine next to it. A 45 minute Bay Cruise via Red & White Fleet under the Golden Gate Bridge and back is the second option.

Sorry to say that I just heard from the O'Brien folks and they have cancelled this cruise due to weak ticket sales. Looks like the only cruises remaining this year are a new one 8/21 which is a wine cruise with ten wineries and their wine club members, and the Saturday and Sunday Fleet Week cruises in October. An opportunity to tour the ship with a group of fellow military historians will be during the MVPA convention excursion on Friday August 12, 2016. That is not a cruise, it is an optional element to the Fisherman's Wharf bus excursion that can be booked through the MVPA and includes a USS Pampanito submarine tour. There is also a dockside fireworks viewing event aboard the O'Brien on July 4th.
