MA grommet transfer case levers

Post by George Hollins » Wed Apr 27, 2016 4:03 pm

It appears the MA used a grommet, not a boot, for the transfer case levers. The MA parts manual lists grommet A-2465 and no metal retaining ring and no screws. Also, see attached original MA photos showing the grommet.

Therefore, MA restorations are probably incorrect to use the MB boot and metal retaining ring screwed to the floor for the transfer case levers.

If anyone has additional original MA photos or information to confirm or dispute this theory please post.

George...Jimmy and I have been looking at this for a long time. Someone needs to make a repro of this rubber boot. I guess there was no rubber shortage yet in mid 41...Sean.

Sean: It sounds like you and Jimmy agree that the MA used a grommet and not the MB boot and metal retaining ring screwed to the floor.

Does anyone have better photos of the grommet to help make a reproduction? Or better yet, does anyone have the original grommet?

Attached are two more photos.

I think Gorge is right. The MB style grommet + retainer ring is not correct for MA. I looked on my 3 original MA bodies, and no one has any trace after holes to fasten the retainer ring to body (see pics). So there was no retainer ring. It looks like there was only rubber grommet. The shape could be "double grommet ring", lower ring under body, upper ring above body...???
The most problem will be probably get original correct shape to let make molds and new grommets.

Hi George,
here is another picture that, in my opinion, confirms your supposition regarding use of a specific grommet instead of a boot.

Ladislav has volunteered to try to make a reproduction grommet. However, all we have to use for a model are the original photographs. If anyone has one of these grommets in any condition please let us know. If someone is already working on making a reproduction please advise so we don’t duplicate efforts.

RobinB had a good idea to try to find an existing boot to use until we can make a correct reproduction. Robin found a Mazda boot that was similar. I took Robin’s idea and bought several boots. The only one I found that fits and looks similar to the original is the John Deere boot L31055 (attached photo). The Deere boot needs to be slightly larger upper diameter, just ¼ to ½-inch possibly. However, the Deere boot could be used as a model to try to make a reproduction.

It looks to me like the artists illustration (first pic on this thread) shows the grommet with two holes - one for each lever? but it's not clear in any other photo - artistic licence?

In the absence of a real one to copy I would buy a 'best guess' reproduction.
