modified parking lights / blackout lights

Postby JeeperJim » Sat Oct 02, 2010 7:08 pm

I have read some of the posts about the modified parking lights so one could install turn signals.
I know that Beachwood Canvas is one supplier that offers the original 45 & 46 bullet style parking light (for CJ2A models) that is modified for a dual filament bulb so that you can have the safety of turn signals. Is there anyone that sells the M38 front blackout light (or parking light) that has a double contact socket installed?
Has anyone purchased any of their lights or lights from others that have a very good quality socket installed?
I have been doing lots of research on sockets used for modifing lights and it seems that all the manufacturers are going
to the rubber cushion style socket over the phenolic ring with springs.
The rubber cushioned sockets are only good for two or three years and very much available at the common named auto parts stores
but I don't want that "stuff".

I know that Cole Hersee maikes some good stuff but their line is dropping off or at least that is the way it looks when you visit their product line
on-line. Many of the part numbers from even the late 1990's are going away.

I guess after all this wind my question(s) is this; Have any of your owners purchased a good quality, ready made replacement light or have you found a really good quality socket that you have used in modifing your front lights for the incorporation of turn signals? Supplier names and part numbers would really be a big help. If anyone has used the B.W. Canvas units with great success that would be helpful too.
Thanks in advance. jeeperjim here on the forum or e-mail; jeeperjim@cox.net

It might not be quite what you were looking for, or were asking, but Bram van Buuren in the Netherlands is offering the following 6/12/24V LED kits to adapt existing lights:

Try here: http://www.saturnsurplus.com/lights/lights.htm

You can replace the front blackout light lens with an amber turn signal lens and rewire for turn signals or even buy a new turn signal light that fits in the blackout light space.

I want the jeep to stay military in appearance. The M151 lights are the same light with the amber lens but they are designed for
a single filament bulb. Has anyone modified these lights for dual filiment usage?
I also noticed the supplier in the Netherlands in the 1st reply to my post but I have to
inquire with him as it appears tha the is using the actual blackout lense which is almost usless for the road not to mention
not very safe. It would be good for show and originalality but not paracticle otherwise.

Keep the ideas coming please!

Thanks, Jim

Jim wants dual filament fronts so he can retain parking lamp function and have the turn signal function separate.

It's not difficult to do. Some states require both a parking lamp and a turn signal up front.

Do what the Canadians do to their M-38A1 CDN3, they mount the M-151 type Amber Light on top of the fenders.

I have used these several times on M38 grilles. Use 1157 bulbs, dual filiment. Paint OD and they look great. Smoked lenses are available for a more subdued look.
Same size and shape as blackout marker light. (used on 02 and newer harleys from factory)
I got several for free at the motorcycle shop, off damaged bikes, sand and paint!

Here is what I have done on mine, I removed the internals from the front marker lights, found an old set of lens covers, removed the blackout marker Y plate from inside the back of the cover. I went out and purchased a yellow/amberish turn signal bulb at the local auto shop and wired them in place with a small homemade L bracket, JB weld and direct wire to the bulbs. You can also buy the bulb assemblies at your local auto shop with socket and all, all you have to do is be sure to run a ground wire into the housing internally, I just used the screws that held the internal lights in plate in place to ground them. BUT, my M38A1 is 12 volt for now, so it was easier for me to do this since I was able to get the parts and components off the shelves locally. An old CJ2A turn signal arm and presto signal lights. I did the same with the rear lights, my poor jeep had the civilian trailer replacement tail lights that are generic but mount right into the military brackets. I had some rusted out internally military round tail light assemblies, I did the same thing. This time I took the civilian light bucket and cut it all off except for a small portion of the back plate and socket, then installed them inside the tail light bodies. Or course the covers, I did the same thing, I removed the blackout plates inside so both the top and bottom portion of the cover show the lights when they are on. I am very happy with it. I ran the jeep up to the local state patrol office and had them look it over, they were pleased with it and gave me a green light. I also did the same thing with the local Po po. Just to be sure, I still get stopped time to time, these great officers just want to check the jeep out. I do not mind at all. I hope this gives you some ideas. I think I have some extra bad buckets that would make great candidates for this conversion for ya. I would ship them to you for the cost of postage. All the best and stay safe!
