m151 motor in cj2a
does anyone know if you can exchange a m151 motor for a l-head motor. going to have to rebuild the l-head and i found the m151 motor for very cheap. just wondering if anybody knew of a conversion kit for it to fit to a t 90 transmission.

Re: m151 motor in cj2a
My 62 CJ5 has a M151 motor and tranny in it. I've asked about conversion adapters for the T90 trans to the M151 engine and gotten no good replies. The M151 trans works ok but is notoriously loud and kinda fragile (due to the integral transfer case) compared to the T90. I like the motor. Seems just beefy enough for an old CJ without overpowering it.
Anyway, my CJ was bought after a PO had done the conversion. He made hybrid drive shafts to make everything fit. My biggest issue with the setup is that the transmission is a center drive and the CJ rear end is a right side drive. this makes for a rather steep angle from center to right on the rear drive shaft. I plan to solve this by finding a center drive rear end unless I can figure a way to adapt the M151 engine to a T90/D18 and use factory drive shafts. Money being a big limitation these days I'm just using it as is until the right parts come along when I have the money to get them.
Good luck on the conversion if you try it. Let me know if there is anything I can help with (pictures etc).

Re: m151 motor in cj2a
While this is an old posting I would like to add a comment. I also have put an M151 into a jeep frame (1957 CJ3B) and I used the M151 engine and transmission. It is easy to do if you use the original jeep transfer case. I removed the transfer case portion of the M151 trany and made up an adapter plate to bolt it to the stock jeep transfer case. The output shaft of the M151 transmision is quite long as it was used to attach the parking brake drum. I used the center out of the brake drum and welded it to the outside of the meshing transfer input gear. It means that you can use the stock rear driveshaft but will have to make a new front shaft !

Re: m151 motor in cj2a
I thought the M151 transmission had all of that internal, hence the front output shaft on the front of the transmission case, I too would love to see photo's of how that was done.(I see it's a rear casing now from the attached)I removed the transfer case portion of the M151 trany
That said It's so much easier to find a replacement engine VS go through all the mod for fitting a MUTT to a JEEP driveline, especially as mentioned the drive shafts and fact the front output is so much lower and not anywhere aligned (L/R) with JEEP product axles.
