Brake Conversions?

Post by artificer » Sun Apr 27, 2008 7:48 am

I went to the salvage yard yesterday to look for some donor bits...there were a heap of older Gladiators with 11" and a J2000 and 4000 with 12".... I am not worried about drum to hub mounting holes etc.
These vehicles all had an offset of 3" from backing plate mount on differential housing flange to hub to drum outside face....MB's and CJ's are about 2.5". Anyone been there or am I missing something?
As well the spindle arm looks like it could be an issue especially with 12" and probably 11" as well. Is this the case?
I'm going back today and will look at some Chevy and Ford disc setups

Just in case you haven't already seen this:

http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Tech/Brakes11inch.html

It provides more options for parts vehicles.

John,
I have just completed fitting disc on the front of my GPW, I used Suzuki Siera rotors and calipers and yes the combat rims fit, (everyone will tell you they don't) You just have to get the right Calipers and rotors.
I was going to fit a VH44 booster but I am too scared of going through the windscreen.
If you want more info I can give it to you.
BTW on the rear I have CJ5 front drums and backing plates with 1 inch slave cylinders.
Cheers

No Seirra's are not a US model although some parts may be interchangeable.
Most common (and available) here are the Suzuki Sidekick and Geo Tracker.
There are current GPW/MB Modification posts/threads on what parts are needed and where to get them.

So where can a person get the parts list and any adapter to make this conversion. I have emailed Ron but after 3 weeks no response. Who in the US makes this conversion kit or adapter or whatever is needed.

Thanks

Ron has a toll free number and you should call him or one of his off siders.

I called Ron and there are still some issues with the kit. No timeline as to when it will be available.

The gentleman I purchased my 3A from installed pre-1978 Ford Bronco drums, shoes, and backing plates, front and back. He claimed everything went on without a problem, and without any special mods that I recall. I'd have to ask him for the specifics as to part numbers, etc. I'm running aftermarket 15" rims, though, so I can't say if stock rims would fit my current setup.

I can tell you this though...when you lay on the pedal, you stop, and fast! :D

I'd be happy to swing by his place in the next couple days to get the specifics, if you'd like, Artificer. :)

Ron decided not to do but a number of people have gone with the Suzuki conversion kit including moi...no conversion problems at all.
Main reason for Suzuki was availability of very cheap parts & lug centres being the same as Jeep.
