More Navy stuff but all post WW2 and with the 1950 and later number system.

1959 picture gray CJ3A with number of 94-XXXXX on hood and tailgate (about 1/3rd up on gate from bottom) in black. The front bumper and rear bumperettes had black and yellow diagonal 'safety' stripes painted on them, something I remember seeing on the Navy and Army vehicles in the 50's and in the Navy continued on certain vehicles later.

1961 picture of two gray Navy CJ5 jeeps at Long Beach shipyard, one had the number of 94-36315 and the other I could not make out in black. Both had no tops and the upholstery looked like faded gray or maybe OD material. Among the other vehicles in the pic were a gray IH Metro van, a black 61 Plymouth sedan and about a 2 ton gray Dodge truck but I couldn't catch the numbers on any.

For the Marines, some kind of small tank or carrier with USMC 557117.
3rd generation US Navy 66-74
Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club 69-71
USS Buck DD-761

USMC Willys

Post by roblenzz » Fri Mar 07, 2008 4:29 pm

I just bought a parts jeep, tub was completely gone from the dash back and bubbatised but original USMC found on the hood, unable to find registration number. Frame number is MB376985. Was set up for deep water fording with all applicable brass data plates affixed to the dash. Oil bath was set up for a snorkel to come out from under the hood and snorkel clamp still bolted to the fender. Frame is completely rotted out from machine gun pedestal back.

I track Navy/USMC radio jeeps. Please tell me, does it have tow hooks in front of the grill and lift rings on the front bumper and within the bumperettes in the rear? How about a 2" x 4" oval hole in the floor of the glove box?

The closest confirmed MB-Navy-MZ-2 near yours is frame number MB-376934.

Do you have any photos?

USMC Radio Jeep

Post by roblenzz » Tue Mar 11, 2008 3:34 pm

Sent PM to your inquiry. There isn't enough left to tell about tow hooks or lifting eyes, but yes there is a 2x4 hole in glove box floor. Navy Bureau of Ships data plate is missing the serial number stamp and appears to be made from stainless steel.

Hello Nick,

I am not sure how to list this MB. 20359065 is a standard Army hood number. Do you think the 65 is a ship number? Could a civilian owner have added the Navy markings or do they look like they were done by the Navy at sometime. I believe the other numbers look to be matching from the fall of 43.

Hi Tom
The numbers were very large(filled virtually most of the hood surface). The edges of the numbers were "clipped off"very much like the style of numbers painted on us ship hulls. They had been painted directly onto the original drab olive and were under many many layers of army green, then civilian colours,so im pretty sure that the numbers are orignal.Or at the very least they were painted on well before the jeep was disposed of as surplus.

USMC numbers

Post by Stephen Davis » Mon Mar 31, 2008 11:36 pm

Hi Tom, interesting list. I have a Mighty Mite M422 A1 USMC 308160.
On the front & rear of the vehical is also a blue V with 730 at the top.
I read this was a pass in & out of a combate zone, I don't know.
Can you shead light on this.
I imported it from Oakland California back in 1999.
The history I was given at the time was it came from the USMC to the Duck River Indain reservation, to the family I got it from.
I would love to know where it may have see service.
It had body damage repaired in service from a roll over.
Thank you.
