1951 U.S.N CJ3A

Post by S.henderson » Wed Feb 01, 2017 8:01 am

Where to even begin!? Well for starters my names Scott and I've recently purchased what I thought to be a regular 'ol 3A turns out its a veteran! Recently started the archeology project of chipping away the trillion and a half year old 50 shades of paint. Ha! On that note as expected gray was encountered but when I accidently chipped too far, O.D GREEN WITH BLACK STENCILING appeared. So as it goes first was red 2ND O.D GREEN (painted by ranch owner prior to 2ND owner) 3Rd was navy gray with small black stencil. 4th was the O.D green with black large font stencil. Then metal... I was extremely excited to say the least, I mean a 1951 NAVY 3A originally painted O.D with the stenciling? Never heard of such a thing. Aside from marine cjv35u's.. this is not a 35u its a 3A... This thing just gets more and more confusing to me and I love it. 8) but id really like to know what this JEEP was used for.. sorry about the crap pictures.. my phone takes huge pics and I've had to crop and edit a ton just to get them to upload. I'll figure it out soon.

Any and all information or who I can speak with in order to obtain information on this type of JEEP would be highly appreciated.

These jeeps were purchased as non tactical vehicles , so no bo lights etc. The military purchased all of the cj jeeps and wagons and pickup trucks to run errands on base etc.

Awesome thanks! So an O.D green paint scheme from factory does not warrant a tactical jeep from the navy in '51? The paint is what's throwing me off. Does that manual have the contracts in it?

Are you sure that is OD and not forest green?

Looks O.D to me. Forest green seems to pop out more in my opinion. Everyone who looked at it in person said O.D. what's your take on it? I'm stressing the whole paint thing because that's what basically put this project at an all stop. Not sure what color to paint it.

That's pretty interesting. So basically it would have been painted green and stenciled by factory and then painted the grey else-where outside of willys by the Navy and re-stenciled?
