MZ-2 391542

Post by cor » Fri Dec 02, 2016 9:07 am

MZ-2 391542 has finally arrived in The Netherlands. The coming time I will slowly start the restoration. I will need a lot of help from the MZ owners, since quiet Some details are missing. To start I uploaded some pics of a cleaned jeep.

Good to know the tow hooks are correct, now I have to try findinding the rings, since these are taken off.

I will also try to carefully search for original markings, the hood is too far gone, but the body might show something.

Now, another question: I noticed the frame, inside body and fenders are treated with a special paint. Were the MZ's treated specialy? I can imagine the navy already knew they were going to be used in pacific / european landings, and therefor needed extra protection.

I included a pic of an example of the treatment I Found on my MZ.

Maybe this question has been asked already many times, but since I am the new kid on the block, I still thought to give it a try.

The tar coating is indeed everywhere, one way or the other I think it pretty much saved my fenders, they seem to be still in a good condition, certainly if you compare it with the condition of the floor, which has basicly dissapeared.
As far as the markings, front bumper is impossible, too rusty, bumperettes might show something. I will do the restoration very carefully anyway, the usmc amb jeep resto took me more than 5 years.
It is very nice to find the original FG color on Some spots, like under the toolkit lids.

Seems to be a recurring theme.

Here is the hood of MB-398405:

I will note, probably again, that my MZ-1 did not have the undercoat.

I read the other post, it seems to me the tar treatment is typical for MZ's produced in late '44 or '45.
As I said, mine was done thoroughly, even the top side of the frame is treated. For me easy to discover since 75% of the bottom of my body is left behind somewhere in the US

Now another question, I see a cut out for the fording pipe in the hood on the pic Mark send, is that a war time configuration? Or part of the after war changes.

I already had a feeling the hole in the hood is added later, I will try to restore the MZ to its original condition.
