Can anyone point me in the direction of the Marine Corps emblem used on WWII jeeps? While I was sanding, I noticed the emblem on the right side of the body, but couldn't get the image in the middle due to the uneven surface. I also noticed a random "7" between the emblem and the "S" that is on the body. What could that be? I will post pics later.

A photo would help.

Are you talking about this "S" on the cowl?

Image

The standard emblem for the USMC was round like this one on the antenna box.

Image

Here is another radio jeep with SCR-608 on the cowl... right next to where the "S" is.

This USMC jeep has the emblem like the above, but just behind the fender.

That is the "S" I am talking about, but there is a "7" below it. That is where the emblem is located, but I don't think it's the same. I'll post pics in a few minutes.

Here is the "S" and the "7" below it. They're both hard to see, but they're there.

And here is the emblem. I'm assuming the "cial" is part of the word "official"

It looks like the actual USMC emblem, but why would it be reversed?

You are seeing it corrrectly. :D

I have been trying to work on a decal for years with Jon Roger, but the "official" on my samples was too messed up to measure how high and what font.

Here is a blow up of the jeep above. You can see the "OFFICIAL" and that the Globe and Anchor are reversed.

This one was too far gone to help much.

So, can you stick a measuring tape on that circle and tell me how big... or better yet a photo with a ruler.

Great looking jeep! Those yellow numbers male it that much better but I'm biased.

Mark, Just wanted to make you aware that after 235 years the Marine Corps has decided to licencse the EGA, and United States Marine Corps. Guess with the budget cuts we need the money for all that advertising. If you ever make the decal I'd be interested. I'm in the Marines if you'd like I can contact the historical divsison in Quantico and see if they can be of any help. They have some information.

I lost sleep over this last night. I'm killing myself for not being more careful. How is it that there isn't a single picture of this?

I sanded some more detail on the ancor. I've checked hundreds of USMC emblems, none look like this.

That is interesting to know about the emblem, Javier.

Quantico... I spent a day at the new museum there a couple of years ago and asked if I could speak to someone on the decal and the GPW they had there on display. They gave me the run around the whole day and did not return my request for a call back though I gave them my card and an explanation of what I wanted. I got the same brush off at MCRD in San Diego the time I visited there. I'm a pretty easy guy to talk to but they were not interested in anything but their agenda as far as I could tell.

Michigan45MB... I would sure like to know at least your first name as it is hard to envision an individual with the name of a state and model of jeep.

As far as the decal... they get painted over, sanded off... you name it. My thinking right now is the decal was only on stateside jeeps as I have not seen any photo in the field with it.

My, those are good photos.

The current magnetic decal that says United States Marine Corps is 5-3/4" in diameter... yours is about 4-3/4".

I grew up about 30 minutes north of Quantico. I can stop by when I go home. My name is Chris.
