Marine Corps Air Station 406. I'm sure 406 represents location, but am unsure as to where that is.

I think the MAAS is a mistake.

Nothing fits it in the USN glossery of abbrevations.

MAA -- Master-At-Arms

MAAF -- Mediterranean Allied Air Force

MAATC -- Mobile Anti-Aircraft Training Center

MAB -- Marine Air Base
...
MCAAS -- Marine Corps Auxiliary Air Station

MCAS is listed and there are lots of them... now and back when.

MCAS -- Marine Corps Air Station

As to what 406 means... do some research.

Start here and find out if the various bases/stations have a number attached to them. If not maybe a squadron within the base maybe?

Oh, how about some photos, please?

The MAAS couldbe from the Korean War. If so, it could stand for Mobile Aircraft Arresting System, and was used on landbased frontline Naval Air Stations, which is why it had to be mobile.

Those old mobile systems were from All American Engineering (spun off from All American Airways, current USAirways).
These systems were large anchor chains layed out along each side of runway w/connecting cable.
As the aircraft catches the cable it drags more and more anchor chain to slow it down.
The argentinians still used this during the Falklands war.
All American Engineering still builds permanent and portable arresting systems, no anchor chain though!

Are you sure it's not a N instead of an M.....Naval Auxiliary Air Station? That's what mine is marked up with, black on grey, same location as yours.
