What ever happened to?

Postby mr Ed » Tue Apr 10, 2007 7:48 pm

Does anyone know what ever happened to the planes that were in a small museum on static display in South carolina.I forget the name of the place ,But they had a command center from apollo missions,a b29 tanker,an a26 invader and some other stuff.I heard the planes were on loan from wright paterson, and since they didnt want them they were destroyed.Just wandered what ever came of this .

Is it this one? If so, still in operation.

No, it sounds more like this one. The Florence Air Museum used to be a frequent stop on our way to and from Myrtle Beach. Sadly it has closed and the aircraft moved or destroyed.

Mr Ed. The B-29 you are talking about that was at Florance SC. was not a refueler. it was a bomber with a lot of history during WW2. it was with the 500th Bomb GP. stationed at Saipan. it,s nose art. was Marilyn Gay, named after the daughter of 1st/Lt Gay it,s pilot. it had 27 bombing missions over Japan, shot down 3 Japanese. fighters, and made 5 emer. air drop missions to pow camps at the end of the war.
it is now on display at the ft. gate of Dobbins ARB. in Marietta GA. where it has been since july 1997. and still looking good.

My dad purchased the Albatross #51-07212 when the airplanes reverted back to military ownership, he was restoring it when he passed away in 2000. The fuselage is still on the airport grounds, engines in TX, props in Oklahoma and control surfaces in Mississippi.

I am from SC, and used to drive pass there all the time also after I joined the Marines.
In my packed away boxes some where I have a photo that a friend took that shows a scrap yard in Florance. In the photo is a big pile of stoves, washing machines, dryers, and on top of the whole pile is the body of a C47 cargo plane. It was just the body, there were no wings. She looked very sad.

I thought the Truculant Turtle was scrapped with the demise of the museum that originally had it on display.
