Please educate me on Bomb Hoists...

Post by 49T&C » Tue Jan 02, 2018 12:47 pm

I picked up a barn fresh Portable USN Bomb Hoist today. I don't have direct need for it, but understand they do not surface that often. Its made by the American Chain and Cable Company - dated 1942. Everything turns freely but the wooden handle is missing (easy fix). Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I have two USN bomb hoists of the 'fish pole' pattern which I assume is what you have. Can you tell me where you found information on them?

OK, it stopped raining so I can walk to the shed. It is identified as...

On side of winch:
1st line - "PORTABLE BOMB HOIST MARK VII"
2nd line - "Cap 1/2 Ton U.S.N. SERIAL NO XXXXX"

Brass tab is marked:
1st line - "U.S. NAVY BU. of ORD.
2nd line - "Mark 7 Mod "
3rd line - Inspector (stamped US and Anchor) No.xxxx"
4th line - "AMERICAN CHAIN AND CABLE CO. INC.,"
5th line - "MANLEY MFG DIV. YORK PA."

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response.
The bomb hoists that I have would seem to be exactly the same as the one you recently acquired.
I notice that you mention the wooden handle is missing. On both of mine the crank handles are aluminium.

The crank handle is aluminum on this one too, but there is another wooden handle on other pics I've seen. My steel bracket is rusted and the wooden part is missing. The winch part is intact and works.

I have one similar, I think it's a Mark VI. No "fish pole". Appears to have been used with PBY's. The hoist being placed above the wing and the cable lowered through the wing to the bomb on the cart.
