Guage ID request.

Post by Schultzd » Wed Jul 20, 2016 10:04 am

Hello;

Please help me ID this guage. It says: General Electric, No. 8948701.1 on the back of the bezel. Application? Vintage?

EGT indicator for a turbine exhaust. Probably either from an APU or GPU.

APU = Air Power Unit. Mounted in the aircraft and supplies power while the aircraft is in motion. Like taxiing.
GPU = Ground Power Unit. An external ground unit that is set outside and attached while the aircraft is parked.
Both supply electrical power to an aircraft.
Would not have to be from a turbine. Could be a piston engine.
An EGT is used to adjust the mixture control on a piston aircraft engine. Also when an EGT is attached to each exhaust, it can indicate a problem with one cylinder. Doubt that would be practical if you had 18 cylinders.
1000 degrees Celsius. Be interesting to find out what it is out of.

Range is way too high for a piston installation, even for the exhaust temp for a turbocharger on a big motor. EGT indicator for a piston engine shouldn't be much above 600C at the max point on the range scale. 1000C is a little over 1800F.

Also, since it's not internally lit and the terminals are massive posts for thermocouple wires rather than a Cannon plug, points to being installed in something that is not not flight rated, or is only accessible on the ground.
