Scout Car Master Cylinder and Steering bos

Post by smithtw » Tue Jan 30, 2018 6:57 am

Anyone know make and model of scout car brake master cylinder? I think can get from Napa if I can get a part number. Also, anyone have any experience at draining lube from steering box? Mine freezes up and won't steer when it's freezing out. I think it must have some water in it. Anyone know where I can get a spare steering box?

Hi. From notes passed along to me by the previous owner of my Scout Car, the following make and numbers were listed for master brake cylinder.

Car Quest BRK E661
Dorman M661
Dorman Master Cylinder Rebuld Kit FM3539

Cannot say for sure that these will work or be an exact match but worth checking out.

Cheers, Terry.

In response to the steering box question the M3A1 Scoutcar uses the same Ross steering box ans the early M2 Halftracks. You can tell the differences by the casting numbers found on the box and/or cover. The Scoutcar and M2 Halftrack boxes start with a casting number of "T". The later Halftracks and all M3 variants start with a casting number of "TA". I own a M2 Halftrack with the "T" steering box. Here is a link to the rebuild I did http://halftrackinfo.com/index.php?topic=941.15. As for parts you are limited to the following:

bearing balls - local bearing store
pitman seal - National 323138
shim pack - same as M35 duce and a half
upper mast bearing - same as M35 duce and a half
cover gasket - make your own (I had a bunch made last month but sold out)

Hope this helps you.

Thanks for info. I got a MS off Gary. Thinking about finding a steering box rebuilder and let them get the parts.
