Re: Gutted the Sherman today (new pics 08AY15)
Someone told me there was a bunch of military stuff down by Circus Circus,I wish I would have read this post before I went down last month! That is a lot of work going into this thing, can't wait to see the outcome.
M-2-A-1 White half-track, 41 CCKW SWB (yard truck), hoping to start working on my G-506 open cab.

Re: Gutted the Sherman today (new pics 08AY15)
The gun was pulled, all rocket holes welded and patched both inside and out. The first coat of filler primer was sprayed today and then we'll hit it with some red oxide primer than OD green.

Your welders do great work. What is the plan for the interior?

Re: Gutted the Sherman today (new pics 08AY15)
We are going to spray a gloss white epoxy (hopefully today) for all the interior and then start figuring out where we are going to run the conduit. This is not going to be an "original" restoration as we are planning on adding modern gauges, HVAC and front/rear/side cameras with separate monitors so that's the next step.nirvana wrote:Your welders do great work. Re: Gutted the Sherman today (new pics 08AY15)
It's getting there. I purchased a Detroit 8V92T pack from another board member here and it's been fitted inside the engine compartment. It's about to get pulled now that the motor and transmission mounts have been fabricated so we can paint the engine compartment. The new final drive was actually bolted in to the cast hull today by the way.kubotaman wrote:Is it done?
We've had so many projects that have taken priority in order to keep business running smoothly that it doesn't get worked on as often as it should. It's now kept in one of the garage bays because it's so stripped down but it again, it's slowly getting there.

Here are some pics with the suspension bolted on, the new transmission/drived bolted up to the cast hull, a pic of the old transmission and front drive. A rocket skipped up into the bottom of the hull and hit the brake inside the front drive unit.

Re: Gutted the Sherman today (new pics 09JUL16)
It's been some time since I've updated this "restomod" but here's where we are at.
My staff fabricated a pack frame for ease of installation/removal (if needed) and for the cooling system but I still need to get pictures of it. We are going to use two of the cooling fans from M113's that are belt-driven to keep the Detroit 8V92T cool. Just one fan pulls in an amazing amount of air but with the Las Vegas heat, we are using two to ensure proper cooling. Along with the fans, we found a drop-in radiator that fit perfectly the rear of the engine. I believe the original application for the radiator was a for a full-size passenger bus with the same engine.
The Sherman will also have air conditioning and we found a nice unit from MRAP I believe that was still new in box. Along with the automatic transmission, guests will be able to drive it easily and not sweat to death during the summer.
I thought I had more pictures but must have deleted some to free up space so I will update again but much sooner than two years.

Re: Gutted the Sherman today (new pics 09JUL16)
CONSIDERING THE STARTING POINT THAT'S A HELLUVA LONG WAY YOU HAVE COME.......agreed; armor restoration is not for the faint of heart or someone with a short attention span or thin wallet. We have some used track and bogies available; the track could be re-rubberized with new pads by the track guys on the Gee here.....May have a lot of woven brass conduit left from restorations in various sizes (all NOS)....should have a summary list in about three weeks listed what is left over.....we joined shorter sections with copper sheet and filed the interior edges to make sure we could pull wire thru the inside. May have a tank compass NOS bracket as well

Re: Gutted the Sherman today (19MAY18) and she's running
My staff was able to get the M4A3 up and running under her own power last weekend. She didn't move very fast but it I believe it's just a matter of finding the sweet spot between the automatic transmission being mated up to the standard transmission. We have to needle scale the "bondo" off the side where an employee of the metal fabricator tried to help out.
Here's some video of her running last Saturday.

Ron,
Are your road wheels NOS? or did you have them re-rubbered?
