Looking for Halftrack repro armor ?

Postby Tom @ Snake River » Wed Nov 23, 2011 7:31 am

Just got into a M2 half track and just doing the home work.

Al Stiefel is out of business.

What about Bob Gillard - I read where he is no longer doing it ??

Gary Hebding is still there.

What about US Machine Corp, they had a decent web-page but just left a email contact.
That bugs that crap out of me when the web site does not leave a address or phone #, it is like they do not what extra business in this bad economy.

i talked to bob gillard recently. he will continue to reproduce armor.
i will soon have cad drawings for the m2 on my site. when that is done you can contact your local laser or waterjet shop and they will be able to download the drawings from my site, push a button and you will just need to countersink. i talked to someone last week that is going to create the drawings.

That would be great to be able to do it locally. I have several excellant shops that do work for me. I am in no hurry, mainly out of "mad money". Next summer would be nice.
Bob seems like a good guy, but handleing that stuff and freight sure add to the cost.
Thanks, Tom

Yes, if you have the ph # for US Machine, that would be good. I would like to look at all options. Cutting it locally from a CAD program would be great, but if that does not work, then you have to look at who does it, and who is closest to keep the freight reasonable.
Also, where is US Machine located, their web site is good but VERY vague about contact info.

A set of CAD prints for the rear armor on both the M2, but mainly the M3, would be most helpful for us living in Europe. Having repro armor made and shipped from the US to Europe costs an arm and a leg (and then some)

Tom, you might post this over on the "Tracked" forum, alot halftrack guys over on that one. I hadn't heard the Al was out of business, I normally see him down at Tower Park in April. Last year he had some samples of armor bolts bolts he was reproducing. I didn't know he did armor, he had alot of the ginger bread parts like machine gun pockets such.

well guys,
I am not trying to start anything BUT I do have to say that I have a set of gillards repo m2 armor, rear steps rusty lengths of straight perimeter rail. It came with a half track purchase.

I WILL BE GLAD TO SELL THIS C*** AND GET RID OF IT UNDER MY TRAILER.. IT WOULD CONSIST OF ALL THE SIDE ARMOR, TRACK ARMOR, PERIMETR RAIL, DOORS UPPER AND LOWER 3500.00

none of the holes are countersunk, the rear steps are super thick, 1/4'' if I remember correctly .
I will have to say this much, if your looking for a bargan and just want to make your vehicle look like a half track, then buy what I have or order it from Bob.

If you want a correct set of armor, or just 1 piece, and your building a show piece, purchase my product. all I could do was shake my head when I was stacking all the pieces on a pallet and think that THIS IS WHAT I AM COMPETING WITH? MANY OF THE SMALLER PIECES WERE MADE TO FIT AND TOOK ON THEIR OWN STYLE OF HOW THEY WERE MADE TO THEIR OWN VERSION BECAUSE THAT WERE NOT REPRODUCED LIKE A ORIGINAL .

BOB HAS BEEN GOING OUT OF BUSINESS FOR SOME YEARS NOW. i HAVE BEEN INVOLVED WITH THIS ALL MY LIFE AND HAVE NO PLANS ON GOING ANYWHERE

SORRY BOB, DIDN'T MEAN TO SLAM YOU BECAUSE IT WAS NOT MY INTENT BUT WHAT I HAVE IN MY WAREHOUSE WITH YOUR NAME ALL OVER THE ITEMS WELL THEY ARE WHAT THEY ARE

I BELIEVE THE SAYING SAYS YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

Tom,
When I did my M2 H/T, a local steel company sheered all of mine to the proper sizes out of 1/4 inch mild steel. All I had to do was drill and countersink all of the holes and buy, cut and drill the angle iron. Once painted, it looked as good or better than original. 8)

still putting others down to make himself feel better. i bet you where a bully in grammar school.

hey topkick, i have a 1/4" plate shear. it makes nice straight cuts. i know alot has been said about laser and waterjet making correct edges but the shear does a good job to. one thing about shears is that the bigger the shearing capacity of the shear the bigger gap they need between the blades. so if they have a shear that shears up to 3/4" then when they shear your 1/4" plate it will roll the edge alot more.

Guys,
I merely made my suggestion to save Tom some very expensive shipping costs. 8)
